Danish Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen met with his Moldovan counterpart Anatolie Nosatîi in Moldova’s capital Chișinău a few days ago to sign a new defense agreement. The aim of the cooperation is to specifically expand Moldova’s military capabilities and make the country more resilient to existing and future threats – particularly hybrid threats.

The project is in line with Moldova’s declared goal of increasingly aligning itself with European standards.

“As a small country neighboring Ukraine, Moldova is exposed to considerable Russian attempts at influence and hybrid threats. It is crucial for Europe’s security that we support states on the front line like Moldova in the fight against external enemies. With the new defense agreement, we as the Ministry of Defense are making our contribution to this – with a total volume of 50 million Danish kroner (just under 7 million euros) over four years,” explained Minister Poulsen.

The defence agreement is part of Denmark’s broader peace and stabilization strategy for Moldova. Denmark’s military involvement includes education, advice, training, material donations and the deployment of specialist personnel – including a defense attaché.

Moldova officially became an EU candidate country as early as 2022; the government in Chișinău is pursuing the goal of becoming a member of the European Union by 2030 at the latest. Denmark expressly and unconditionally supports this path.

“Since the start of the major Russian invasion in 2022 (-> Latest news from the war in Ukraine), Denmark has been one of Ukraine’s most loyal supporters – and we want to keep it that way. Supporting Moldova, whose capital is only a few hours’ drive from Odessa, is therefore not only a strong signal for Moldova’s security, but also an important contribution to strengthening Europe’s external borders,” concludes Troels Lund Poulsen.
