Statement submission:
For the past week or so, we have seen significant international pressure on Israel. The joint statement led by the UK has some 30 signatories, nearly all of them Israeli allies. France is about to recognise Palestine and there are calls in the UK to do the same. Even Germany has put out a joint statement with UK and France about how horrific the situation has become. Israel is now conceding that there is a famine occurring (although denies responsibility) and is going to permit more aid in to alleviate the suffering of the Palestinian people.
I’m ashamed to say I defended Israel at the beginning of this war.
Israel thought that mistreating civilians would push civilians to topple hamas.
It hasn’t worked. Even in a situation like this, Palestinians are more afraid of hamas. Insurgencies are impossible to break without hurting civilians.
If Israel gives more food, hamas is still going to steal it and some people won’t get food.
An alternative would be to give 2 or 3 times the food that’s needed, letting Hamas steal it and saturate gaza with food. If gazans somehow still starve, they might try to steal it back, forcing them to turn on hamas.
