Malta is at a crossroads. We are facing a cost-of-living crisis that is hitting families hard, a housing market that feels out of reach for too many, an education system struggling to keep pace with a fast-changing world, growing pressure on our infrastructure and environment and national institutions which are not doing their job.
These problems are interlocking, all caught in a short-term thinking loop that we desperately need to exit now.
Malta and Gozo deserve a new way of doing politics, rooted in humility, discipline and vision.
As a credible alternative government, we must lead by example. We need to listen first and then speak, include not exclude, and we need to serve before we judge. Narrow agendas and limited conversations are not the way forward. The Nationalist Party needs to be an alliance that opens outwards, actively hearing the voices, ideas and energy of all those who want to shape Malta’s future.
If entrusted with the leadership of the Nationalist Party, one of my first actions will be to launch a National Convention on Malta’s Future. It will be a participatory, non-partisan forum designed to bring together people from all walks of life – civil society, youth, NGOs, academics, workers, entrepreneurs, professionals, pensioners and citizens who want to contribute to a shared national vision.
The aim is to listen deeply and act decisively, focusing on the real, that is the people’s priorities and challenges. How do we make housing affordable? How do we plan for sustainable population growth? How do we shift to a preventive and community-driven healthcare model? How should we reform education to equip our students from early on with the skills they need for the world ahead? How do we deliver real environmental protection instead of platitudes? How can we balance environmental protection with investment and job creation? How can we reshape our institutions to regain public trust?
We are open to change, to listen, to discuss but, ultimately, to propose a real alternative for Malta- Alex Borg
Politics need to be done differently. The best solutions emerge when people are part of the process, not excluded from it. An open government is about setting direction and building consensus. It’s not about erasing the past but about learning from it and daring to re-imagine it for today and tomorrow.
The Nationalist Party has a proud history of rising to the occasion when the country really needed it most. The best way to honour that legacy is to do what we have always done best: leading with courage, ideas and conviction.
The National Convention will mark a shift from reactive politics to proactive leadership. It will ensure that our next electoral manifesto is not just a set of promises but the outcome of a real national conversation.
The PN should not be derailed by Robert Abela’s cheap and manipulative talk of a snap election. We must remain focused and united behind a common aim – offering an alternative to this government and win the next election whenever it is called. Our mission is to rebuild Malta’s politics from the ground up, using every day to prepare the foundations of future-proof policies.
The National Convention will place the PN at the heart of a renewed political culture – one that is inclusive, modern and ready to govern. It will challenge us to go beyond comfort zones and to engage with realities that matter to people’s everyday lives. It will provide a platform to focus on strategic, cross-party issues that are essential for Malta’s next decade, from digital transformation to climate resilience, from well-being to institutional renewal.
We are open to change, to listen, to discuss but, ultimately, to decide and propose a real alternative for Malta.
The time is now. We are in time to shape our future and not be shaped by it. We must come together – across generations, professions and communities – to imagine a better Malta and commit to building it. The Nationalist Party, under my leadership, will be the platform for a genuine national renewal.

Alex Borg is a candidate for the leadership of the Nationalist Party.
