The attack on Australia’s net zero target is reckless and gutless. Voters expect more than ‘intergenerational bastardry’. While Barnaby Joyce and Michael McCormack try to ditch the 43% net zero 2030 emissions target, Australia’s net zero target for 2035 has not yet been set.

  1. From the comments to the story:

    >“We know that most Australians care about climate.” Yep. Most do. The good denizens of Goldstein however, voted for the Liberals. And therefore the Nationals as part of their coalition. Hard to fathom what goes through their heads when they look at their grandchildren.

    >Better luck next time.

Despite their name, the Liberals in Australia are a center-right party.

  2. What people like Barnaby and so on seem to not understand is that deep cuts in the early years of a net zero transition are more important than what timeframe you are operating on (area under the curve, go back to year 7 or 8 maths) and give yourself longer to do the more difficult things. The electricity sector and transport are comparatively easy to do rapid cuts in, food will be real difficult.

  3. I’m listening to an interview of an Australian guy. He’s in a business addressing Climate, no question. New Energy economics is the subject of the interview. But he says, “..I don’t vote Labor.. ..I don’t vote for them, I vote Teal. I’ll be very clear.”

The Australian Liberal Party just look like a bunch of corrupt buffoons. I thought they would move on after the last election, but I guess the money is just too good. The Fossil industry still believes in the Domino Theory and can’t afford a Western Democracy to fall to Renewables. In my mind, this is just so clear, and so totally insane and destructive on many levels.

Here in the US, this corruption is much more effective. There’s no Teals, no compulsory voting. Fire up whatever divisive populist crap and bludgeon the electorate with Doom. Get a guy with no ethics whatsoever. “Eligible, Didn’t Vote” is the winner, but 2nd place, “hate and anger” gets the seat.
