Why is there this detour on the way to Thessaloniki before Sofia, through Botevgrad? What happened on the highway?

Shit road conditions. Lotsa holes on the highway so passing through Botevgrad kinda saves time. That and constant roadwork (don’t know if they’re doing things atm, I am abroad).
Shouldn’t shave off more than 10-20 mins but it’s a pretty town imo and you could stops for anacks.

Two of the viaducts (bridges) are being reconstructed at the moment. The traffic goes from 3 lanes to 2 lanes and creates huge traffic jams. The detour save lots of time (especially during work days) and it is quite scenery. The tarmac itself is also new on the detour, so it is a pleasant drive. Don’t worry about it and safe travels.
