On the M2 South bound and the opposite side North bound just after and before the Dunsilly roundabout there's these areas of widened road. I've never seen them being used and can't work out why they were built, would anyone know?

  1. As far as I’m aware, it was meant to branch off to Ballymena, but that section got cancelled. Which is why there is a section of M2 bypassing Ballymena.

  2. Just my opinion but years ago there were plans to continue the motorway that used to end at the larne road roundabout in ballymena, I’m guessing this may be where it was planned to tie in. The plans were scrapped and the existing A26 between dunsily roundabout and ballee roundabout was dualled instead. Then a while after that a new dual carriageway was built from larne road roundabout to ballee roundabout.

  3. M2 becomes M22 after dunsilly as the M2 was meant to branch off here and run all the way to Ballymena.

That’s the reason there’s a random section of the M2 running around Ballymena…..excellent planning and execution as always in this place 🤦‍♀️

  4. During initial planning it was anticipated that this would be a junction, I think heading up to Coleraine. Also explains why the two carriageways are further apart. There is some information on the internet – try Wesley Johnston.

  5. A quick bit of research and I found that the M2 was originally planned to go to Coleraine, presumably this would have been the direction the road would have went to get there, they scrapped that plan and dualled the A26.
