The Luxembourgish government is currently creating a police service (UGO) whose members will be equipped with tasers.
A coalition election promise, the addition of tasers to police equipment is taking shape. In response to a parliamentary question from MPs Guy Arendt and André Bauler (DP), Minister of Home Affairs Léon Gloden confirmed that the process has been launched.
The Operational Support Group (UGO), whose creation is under consideration, will be attached to the Guard and Operational Support Unit (UGAO) from 1 January 2026.
In the short term, the UGO counts on handing out tasers to 36 police officers. These officers will be on duty 24/7. Their mission is to support the already existing police patrols in Luxembourg, so that they can be used in case of risky interventions for instance in incidents of domestic violence.
The UGO will also serve to assess the usefulness and implementation of tasers among law enforcement agencies. Minister Gloden wants to evaluate their use in a limited context. Each UGO police officer will participate in a two-day training course on the use of electric stun guns.
