Princess Leonor and Infanta Sofia traveled to Switzerland together over the weekend to support Spain in the final match of the 2025 UEFA European Women’s Championship on Sunday. It was the first time Spain, the reigning world champions in women’s soccer, have made it to a final in the Women’s Euros.
In what became a rematch of the Women’s World Cup final from 2023, Spain took on England, the defending European Champions. The Spanish princesses were seated next to Prince William, the patron of England’s Football Association, and his daughter Princess Charlotte in the VIP section at Basel’s St. Jakob’s Park stadium.
Sunday’s match concluded in a dramatic fashion that reflected a rollercoaster tournament, going into extra time with England beating Spain in penalty shootout. Leonor, also styled as the Princess of Asturias, and Infanta Sofía met with the Spanish team after the match to congratulate them on a well-played tournament and thank them for all their hard work.
In one video shared to the Spanish royal family’s official Instagram account, the caption reads (translated from Spanish), “Don’t lose that energy you have @SEFutbolFem. Congratulations on the great work you’ve done throughout the championship! I’m sure that with your quality and effort, many more successes will come.”
Ahead of the tournament, Queen Letizia welcomed the players to La Zarzuela Palace on June 25. There, team captain Irene Paredes presented Letizia with an Adidas team jersey featuring her name on the back. The Queen and Infanta Sofia previously made the long-haul journey to Sydney in August 2023 for the Women’s World Cup final.
