Carney’s “nation-building” is nothing but a blast from the past

  1. I may be in a bit of a negative mood but I feel like what’s really collapsing is wealth equality – that Carney has little control over it – and that with a free trade agreement with the US crumbling it’s life in Canada is going to get worse no matter what he does.

We definitely do need a more streamlined way of evaluating and approving projects in Canada. The current system has simply just never been successful.

A cross country pipeline is maybe not going to deliver massive prosperity – but it’s becoming increasingly politically important to not be reliant on US infrastructure, which we currently are. Just having the twinned trans mountain allowed us to be less reliant on US customers, gave us access to ship to other countries, and also allowed the province of Alberta refineries to send more refined product to BC using the older existing line – which is the type of value added work we absolutely need more of whenever possible.

I get that the author thinks everything we can do is a waste of time but also thinks that during this financial crunch we will be prioritizing more work on climate change and first nations relationships, at a time when we’ll instead struggle to maintain the status quo with our existing social programs. Seems like a bit of a disconnect on how much money we have to spend.

  2. “Prime Minister, the country is in crisis because of neoliberalism! What should we do?”

The Prime Minister leans back back in his chair, smiling.

    “More neoliberalism”

  3. Maybe I’m reading too much subtext into it, but that article seems like a not-so-subtle message to Carney telling him to sign a trade deal with Trump or else.

*”Hey look Trump upended the global order and got the EU to sign a deal, line up you outdated-ideas guy, it’s your turn next, don’t test us by waiting past August 1st!”*

Maybe USAID is funding “Independent” Canadian media again. Based on his past negotiation strategies I could see Carney being a stubborn holdout.
