Because it’s a good system for elderly and disabled people to get around. And affordable.
I’m not sure how their popularity is in other countries. If you’re right it might just be that they’re often paid for by the municipality here, but I’m not sure if that’s unique to the Netherlands.
Our infrastructure and particularly cycle infrastructure is pretty unique, however. These mobility scooters are mainly used for trips that you would otherwise do on foot or on a bicycle. The Netherlands has the world’s best cycling infrastructure, and is also very good at making neighbourhoods and cities walkable. That infrastructure is also useful for these mobility scooters.
Because within our Social Support Law, people who need help with mobility, can get one for ‘free’ from the municipality (gemeente) if they apply for it and meet the requirements
Old people are slow
Because we have walkable cities and towns. They would be completely useless in suburbs where people have to drive long distances to the closest store
these mobility scooters are electric, because the idea of all these old and disabled people with triac-type bikes with high-powered gas engines racing over the walk and bike lanes is terrifying.
Because we want old people to be self depended as long as possible.
Because they’re useful due to the cycling infrastructure, in a car centric city like in the US or most of the other countries they’re just useless for everyday use
Insurance covers most of the costs
Because people are unhealthy, fat and lazy
? Go visit a Walmart in America
So popular? I’ve lived here for 17 years and i have never seen one underneath someone that wasn’t elder, and even that was rare AF.
Let’s not forget an important part of dutch infrastructure. The whole infrastructure in the netherlands is build around scooters, strollers and wheelchairs. Almost every sidewalk has a slope to get on and off. Some may even have multiple. When you’re in a wheelchair because you broke both your ankles or legs, you can move around pretty easily in the cities
Wall-E was a really popular movie amongst old people. They aspire to become just like the fat people on that spaceship and these electric scooters enable them to grow fat before they give the pipe to Maarten.
I dont live in the best of neighbourhoods and over here they are predominantly used by alcoholics and people that are just too fat and lazy to walk. That doesn’t mean they’re not good for their intended use obviously.
We don’t have a gun culture over here, but these are just as lethal.
Giving the elderly a heavy and quickly accelerating vehicle is one of the worst developments and causes me to continually be on the lookout for these silent killers when out in the supermarket or city centre.
Are they?
Because they are just lazy, and mostly fat
It’s a good mode of transport for people that can only walk or cycle short distances and also people that shouldn’t be driving cars. Dutch infrastructure also helps, the infrastructure is made for people, a nice video that goes into that and also feature a couple of these mobility scooters is a video by BicycleDutch: https://youtu.be/xSGx3HSjKDo
luie mensen ouwe waaorm lopen ze niet
Isn’t it obvious from the picture? Its an office chair with an engine.
Because we are americanising.
dont try this shit at hoooome
Netherlands turning into the USA more quickly than expected..
People are poor and taxes on driving are high.
because its convenient. The Netherlands is compact so if you are old or handicapped you can easily ride to the supermarket in less than ten minutes. The infrastructure of roads and sidewalks is pretty good too.
I don’t see as many here as I did living in canada most of my life, or visiting the US ( very common there) and honestly they’re better drivers here.
Had an older lady corner me in an elevator with one in Toronto to scream profanities at me over my sleeping kid in a stroller in a subway station. had to call the police.
The north american drivers of these are aggro, they’ll run you down.
But I see far less of them here, but it’s no big deal to me to see them tootling along the bike paths. Just don’t run me down, oma.
I think this is great! I see many people who are unable to walk and they are easily using these type of scooters to get around. Roads are also perfect for it. It was the first time in the Netherlands I saw old people go around easily without a young people help
Because our country is aging rapidly. In Dutch we call this ‘vergrijzing’. There are just a lot of 60 plussers in the Netherlands and some of them need mobility scoorters.
I think it has several reasons.
1. We have a bicycle “culture”. So anything remotely close to home we take the bicycle not the car.
2. There’s financial aid to get these things for people who need them.
3. Elderly people are very independent here. Care homes are quite shitty and in The Netherlands it’s not usual to have your elderly parents move in with you to take care of them (like in Southern Europe and plenty of other parts of the world, eldery people usually are taken in by their kids so they are taken care of, there’s none of that here). So there’s a lot of ways to aid elderly people at their own homes. These things help elderly people who aren’t very mobile to keep their independence so they can still go places without needing a ride from someone else.
Compared to what country…?
Because the ones on gasoline are not allowed inside
The diesel ones are considered too loud
Pretty sure they are used by people who actually need them. Anyone can apply for aid to obtain one if they meet certain requirements. Like not having a financial capital higher than x, a mobility scooter being the only viable long term option, etc. They aren’t just a hip and easy alternative to walking.
Because in the Netherlands you don’t get flattened by a 2000 kilo SUV every intersection.
I also wondered this when I moved here. I basically see at least one whenever I go out.
Unrelated question but related; what do you think of a mobile person on a scooter like that?
Im asking since im self conflicted over it. My mom has one, my bikes broken, so i can walk a couple of km to pick up something real quick or jump on the scoot
But when i do so, i dont know, it feels discrespectfull?
Like im not acting as if im immobile or anything and handle it properly but still haha
They are easy to get around in for a short ride outside for either elderly folk or people that have some form of dissability 🙂

It exudes luxury, duhh
Because of the large amount of old people here.
