Hi there,

So, I have a question I asked many people yet and I saw no relevant answer. I bought a house in a small state in NRW back in 2019. On my right side/downside is a neighbor, in front of me is the street and on the left side, is a small plot (Grundstuck) and the Autobahn (my house is about 8-10m above/height from the autobahn). I have sketched an image of what it looks like (link [https://ibb.co/zZFkCPr](https://ibb.co/zZFkCPr)). Until now I always cleared the plot, witch is 3-4m wide, of weed — if I don’t do that it will really look like a jungle… It looked like a jungle back then when I bought the house but I succeeded to clear the weed off and now it looks somehow better ( I really don’t want a jungle near my garden). Now it comes to my mind to plant some vegetable in that plot (which is better than weeds) the problem is I don’t know if it s legal? So, the Plot is too small for someone to buy it and to build a house or something on it and its likewise since forever (at least that is what my neighbor told me). I asked my neighbor about my intention and he said this plot is not belonging to my state administration but rather to NRW, so it is in vain to ask about it in my Rathaus state. And about the weeds … the same neighbor (who is a resident seit forever here) told me, every 10y or so, somebody will come and clear the weed off. So, what are your advices?

Ps: and Im sorry for my English mistakes, seit I lern German I forget much of my english skills

  1. I don’t know whether it’s allowed or not but if you plant something there it’s going to be public property so anyone could legally harvest it.

  2. It’s not your plot of land and eventually you might have to remove everything you planted there. Not worth the hassle.

If the looks bother you, plant some bushes on your side.

  3. Just go ahead and grow your veggies! The state might object if you plant prune trees or raspberries bushes, but some spinach or carrots? Nobody cares.

  4. Wanna get rid of the hassle of maintaining the area? Secretly plant some hemp and it will be magically removed by authorities on a regular basis.

  5. Well, this sounds like the kind of thing that results in a bureaucratic letter from a bean-counting state government official and an interview for one of those TV shows that like to satirize government incompetence, like *Extra 3*.

For example, it could be that the plot is there to promote biodiversity, which means that the plants are supposed to be allowed to grow naturally (a “weed” is just a plant that you don’t want in that place).

There’s probably some ordinance buried in some small print somewhere. But I think the worst you can expect is a bizarre letter saying, “Please stop doing this”: nobody’s going to arrest you or probably even fine you, and it’s not the kind of thing the police are going to be interested in.
