As the title suggests I am needing help trying to figure out what is the best and most effective way to ship everything in the storage unit shown to Norway since I live here now.

The unit itself is pretty tiny, at a 5×5 or 2,323 square metres

My main hurdle is that I am not in the US at all anymore and am relying on a friend to go through all of my things, I'm not even sure if it's possible to get a shipping company to maybe repackage everything?? The cost isn't really an issue and there's nothing extremely heavy, it's mostly clothes, anime figures and books. The only thing I'm worried about is the figures getting damaged in transit or my computer/drawing tablet.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

  1. Are you rich? You say cost isn’t an issue but…. it will cost you a lot 😛

Not being an expert, it would probably cost you at least 1k or two just for the shipping, then there’s additional fees and stuff.

Declaration will be a nightmare. You will have to prove each item as a previously owned item in a previously resided country to avoid most of the taxes. You will still have to pay some taxes. If they find discrepancies and decide to evaluate the whole shipment they will charge you for that. This could cost you a shit ton of money.

I would prioritize and ship small packages. Give the rest away or sell it where it is if you can.

  2. Jetcarrier.com ships things to Norway in containers, they can also pickup your stuff from a location.

I have used them to ship for me the last 20 years.

Just make sure everything is in boxes.

  3. I had this situation during Covid so I had to literally get a friend of mine to find cheap labor in my local town who I then Venmoed to repack everything properly and to take pics of the process. Then got U-pack We Ship to send to Norway. My recollection is that they handled all the customs stuff and they said that if it was part of my moving to Norway (not sure if it had to be within a year of registering with folkeregister) it was toll free. I remember adding a massive Amazon order to the shipment.

  4. Jetcarrier would be the cheapest, idealy your friend would stack it on pallets and wrap it but i belive jetcarrier can arrange for a freighter to do that also.

Ive shipped alot of pallets/packages with them but never used their pickup, so not sure how the price is on it.

  5. If you are intent on shipping all of it, my advise would be to ask your friend to contact some US based shippers on your behalf and ask about it. The best solution is likely going to be packing it all onto a pallet or into a crate, and having a compnay like DHL or similar handle the whole process for you. You’ll need a freight company to do the paperwork for you unless you know someone with intimate knowledge of US export and Norwegian import regulations.

This will likely cost thousands of dollars, so I would absolutely advise you to get quotes before commiting to anything. If you have the patience for sea freight and road freight that might save you a good chunk vs sending it by air.

I would consult with a shop that sells these kinds of figures for advise on how to best pack them for shipping. Maybe you could even pay such a place to wrap it all up for you.

As for the computer, that should be easy enough to pack securely. You could consider one of those metal suitcases with soaft foam padding on the inside for example.

Overall though: You really should consider if there is stuff in there that you could sell, donate or dispose of before you start planning the shipping, as every box will be expensive to transport over such a distance.
