A Camden Class of 1983 graduate recently went back to the United Kingdom to celebrate her time there.
Carolyn Armstrong is a proud alumna of Brasenose College, one of the 43 colleges that make up the University of Oxford. She recently returned to Oxford to attend Brasenose College’s landmark event, “Celebrating 50 Years of Women’s Admission.” Founded in 1096, the University of Oxford is the oldest English-speaking university in the world and the second oldest in continuous operation. Carolyn holds a distinguished place in Oxford’s history as the first Black woman from the United States to attend Brasenose College.
She matriculated at Brasenose College in 2006, enrolling in the Master of Social Policy program. From 2007 to 2014, she pursued doctoral studies (Doctor of Philosophy, DPhil — equivalent to a U.S. PhD) at Wolfson College, an all-graduate college of the University of Oxford, with her research based in the Department of Geography and the Environment.
Armstrong said many educators at Camden had a hand in her education and growth.
“Miss Susan Faulkner, my band teacher, Mr. Ron Allen. Miss Wester. … The list goes on and on,” she said. “Oh, Miss Galbert, don’t want to forget Miss Galbert. I was so shy and she made me get up on stage and and start drama and first I was like, oh my goodness and then the time went on I really loved it.
“So I had a lot of inspiration inspirational teachers at Camden when I was in school.”
Her academic accomplishments include a Bachelor of Science in Radio/TV Management from Arkansas State University (Jonesboro) and a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from the University of Phoenix, where she was part of Ford Motor Company’s executive MBA program at Ford Headquarters in Dearborn, Michigan. She also pursued an MBA in Finance at Abu Dhabi University in the United Arab Emirates.
