Communities across the southern half of Minnesota saw more destruction after a second round of strong storms Monday.

MINNEAPOLIS — As a second round of storms made its way across the southern half of the state Monday night, bringing with it heavy rain, quarter-sized hail and intense winds with potential to reach up to 70 mph.

Communities including Edina, Eagan, Inver Grove Heights, Columbia Heights, Winstead and South St. Paul reported fallen trees, while residents all across the metro reported power outages.

As of 11 p.m., more than 130,000 Xcel Energy customers were without power.

Around the same time Monday, a 70 mph wind gust was recorded at the Owatonna Airport. Until then, the strongest gust of the day was recorded in New Prague at 64 mph — with reports in other areas of gusts from 55-65 mph.

Just before 11 p.m., KARE 11’s weather team reported the storm was traveling southeast of the Twin Cities and moving toward Wisconsin at 45 mph.
