In Sophie: Saving the Royal Family by Sean Smith, the author wrote that Sophie did not go to Princess Diana's funeral on Sept. 6, 1997, because of the striking resemblance that she and Diana shared.
"She had an obvious and reasonable excuse: a friend at the palace explained, 'Sophie decided it would be too upsetting for the crowd if she went,' " Smith wrote in the biography published on July 17, the Daily Mail reported. " 'She's well aware that she looks like Princess Diana from a distance and made her decision in a caring and thoughtful way. The royal family fully supported.' "

I really doubt this. Until very recently, non-spouses did not participate in events like this.
I remember Sophie clearly trying to look like Diana. Exact same hairstyle and often wearing near copies of her clothes. It was a bit single white female at the time.
I suspect Sophie was not invited because she was Edward’s girlfriend. Not engaged or married.
And no the public would not have been upset at seeing her because she reminded the of Diana. Although some might have been upset at seeing her obviously copying Diana.
This is so embarrassing for her.

Why would she have gone to Diana’s funeral, anyway? She wasn’t part of the RF at the time and as far as anyone is aware, had zero relationship with Diana…
I remember newspapers in the early 90s running side-by-side comparisons of Sophie and Diana. They called Sophie her “Di-dentical twin” and portrayed it as flattering that Sophie took inspiration from Di’s style. It was creepy.
