CARBONDALE, Ill. (KFVS) – A man and two juveniles were arrested in connection with a theft from a Carbondale business.
Javier J. Upshaw, 18, of Carbondale, was arrested for retail theft. He was taken to the Jackson County Jail pending a detention hearing.
According to Carbondale police, they responded to a report of a theft at a business in the 1400 block of East Main Street around 11:44 a.m. on Friday, July 25.
Officers say an adult and two juveniles, ages 16 and 17, left the business with merchandise they hadn’t paid for.
They found the suspects and arrested them for retail theft.
During the investigation, officers learned the adult, later identified as Javier Upshaw, had a gun during the incident. They say he gave the gun to one of the juveniles, who tried to hide it as they were fleeing.
According to the police department, the gun was recovered.
Officers arrested the juvenile for unlawful use of a weapon in addition to retail theft.
The juveniles were released to their parents pending appearances in court.
Police say no one was injured in the incident.
