UK to recognise Palestine unless Israel agrees ceasefire and ends Gaza suffering

  1. Sir Keir Starmer is winding up a Cabinet meeting to discuss a Middle East peace plan that would put Britain on a path to recognising a Palestinian state within months.

That recognition will only come if a ceasefire is reached [between Israel and Hamas in Gaza,](https://inews.co.uk/news/politics/trumps-gaza-warning-israel-starvation-3830347?ico=in-line_link) *The i Paper* understands.

Senior Government sources did not rule out joining France in recognising a Palestinian state at the UN General Assembly in New York in September if a ceasefire continues.

However, one source said the chances of a lasting ceasefire currently appear “slim,” so Starmer is not guaranteed to make the commitment.

Amid mounting pressure to recognise Palestine, Starmer [held the unusual Cabinet meeting in Downing Street on Tuesday.](https://inews.co.uk/news/politics/starmer-emergency-gaza-meeting-3830981?srsltid=AfmBOooe6L7Wt0M9zi3hXcmX_HMprl4prdXU6YFzA4Vsd1u6tyE9sbrF&ico=in-line_link) Senior Cabinet ministers, including David Lammy, Angela Rayner, and Wes Streeting, had been pushing the Prime Minister to speed up the path to recognising Palestine as a state.

He wanted a sign-off for his plan after discussions with Donald Trump in Scotland on Monday.

No 10 said that Starmer and Trump discussed plans being drawn up with France and Germany to bring about a “lasting peace” amid concerns of a humanitarian catastrophe.

French President Emmanuel Macron announced he would formally recognise Palestinian statehood in September, provoking opposition from Israel and the United States.

  2. Hamas: Refuses ending the war despite Israel agreeing to everything hypocrites from the west say Israel should agree to.

The West: Ignores that completely, and just days after decides to reward Hamas for their refusal to end the war. And make sure every Palestinian knows Hamas and terror and mass rape and torture and holding hostages, is what’s getting them achievements.

You are not recognizing any Palestinian state. You are recognizing Hamas state. And just like Israeli FM Saar recently said, the fact that you have completely lost any sort of morals or touch with objective reality, does not mean Israel will commit national suicide.

UK and France and whoever else joins this madness simply makes sure to increase the number of victims in both the Israeli side, but as always mostly on the Palestinian side. The ones you pretend to care about.

  3. >Starmer said this would happen “unless the Israeli government takes substantive steps to end the appalling situation in Gaza, reaches a ceasefire, makes clear there will be no annexation in the West Bank, and commits to a long-term peace process that delivers a Two State Solution”.

This Israeli cabinet is not going to meet _any_ of the requests here, let alone all of them. If Starmer follows through with this promise, it means the UK will recognise Palestine alongside France. This makes 4 of 5 UNSC Permanent members recognising Palestine.

  4. «Unless Israel agrees to a ceasefire». The cat is finally out of the basket. The UK government is really saying that Hamas is going to remain in power. And further attempts by Israel to pursue its war aim will be met with political action.

  5. Israel accepted a ceasefire proposal where they release 1,000 Palestinian prisoners, including 200 Hamas terrorists serving life sentences for murders. In exchange they would only get 10/20 remaining living hostages and have 60 days to negotiate for the other 10.

Hamas rejected the deal and insisted on a permanent ceasefire where they only give up 10 hostages and can keep the other 10, with Israel having no right to hostilities to get them back.

Starmer: Sounds like Israel is the one that needs to be pressured. Let’s give Hamas another incentive to play hardball.

I’ve been a pretty huge advocate for the US remaining heavily invested in European defense but after Macron and now Starmer are pulling these stunts I’m beginning to waver on that.

They don’t want the US to dictate terms to Ukraine where the casualties and suffering are exponentially higher, because Ukraine matters for their defense.

But they want to dictate Israel accept an even more insane deal than the most recent draft, because it helps them politically.

The US should keep that in mind next time they ask for help.

  6. I can understand if they (i.e. UK, France) want to make threats based on needing to get more food / humanitarian aid into Gaza, but they are pretty much just sabotaging active negotiations, at a time where most major players are saying that Hamas is the one rejecting all offers, and not willing to make a deal. By making threats like this, you further incentivize Hamas to dig down deeper, and take no deal.

  7. a ceasefire requires both sides to agree. Hamas has refused to make a deal, and their position is so unrealistic that even mediators from egypt and qatar have gotten upset.

The idea that Palestinians have no agency and that Israel can agree to a ceasefire without a deal is silly
