Growing watermelons in Sumy, not the warmest area of Ukraine. The farmer says he relies on love for the land and strong values and the Ukrainian army

  1. In the Sumy region, despite an unusual climate for watermelons, the village of Besedivka is harvesting watermelons for the second year in a row. Local farmer Petro Postil grows them and this year the heaviest watermelon weighs nearly 15 kg

    Growing watermelons isn’t easy, says farm worker Oksana Protsenko. Daily challenges include bad weather and hares nibbling on the fruit:

    “I’ve worked with watermelons for two years. It takes a lot of effort to grow them. We start them in greenhouses from seeds. Then we transplant the seedlings into the ground, care for them, water them. And you need love. If you grow them with love, they turn out well. The harvest makes us happy, the biggest watermelon weighs 14.7 kilograms.”

    Petro Postil says that this year, two hectares were planted with melons and watermelons, including several watermelon hybrids and, for the first time, melons.

    “We’re standing in the field with the first planting of watermelons. This is a hybrid called Talisman. We planted it in late April under thermal covers. By July 10, we were the first in the region to harvest ripe watermelons”

    Some of the harvest is sold, the rest given away

    “We already sold about 5 tons, and we’re giving away a lot. The early planting didn’t yield much, but this second one should produce more. If everything goes well, we plan to harvest 40–50 tons. Thanks to God and our defenders, we were able to grow watermelons on our Sumy land” says the farmer.
