I would argue that public transport from 7-9 and 16-18 need to majorly expanded because it is bursting full. Can public transport here in Luxembourg be improved? Hell yes. Is it as bad as people make it out to be? Far from it.
We do need more dedicated bus lanes so that a vehicle carrying 50+ people can bypass vehicles that are stuck in traffic with only one person inside… Tram needs to be build out way further and it would make sense to eventually have it run from Mersch to Luxembourg City.
The argument that free public transportation has made it bad is nonsense because ticket fares didn’t even cover 10% of the operating budget of all public transport in Luxembourg
Trains/busses/tram is packed with commuters every day at rush hours, and in the city the free transit makes it incredibly convenient and simple to move around. Yes, there are certainly places/towns that lack better coverage, but what does better coverage have to do with making it free?
Talking about ideological nonsense in the same post as stating those kinds of reasoning just seems like lack of self awareness.
Even before transit was free, a big chunk was already subsidized by the state. Making it free didn’t cost a lot. The argument that you could take that money to improve public transport therefor doesn’t hold up.
On the other hand, Luxembourg is the country that over the last years (decade) has invested more in public transport per capita than any other country in the world.
There is a lot of space for improvement (rural areas, inter-village connextions, etc), but one has to acknowledge that a lot has been done and will be in the next years:
Here are some examples:
Tram + tram extensions
More bike lanes
More separates bus lanes (like the one on the A3)
Doubling the train tracks on the Bettembourg/Lux line to increase train frequency and reduce delays
Buying new train cars to increase capacity
Modal hubs in the city
Yes it’s totally correct. Absolutely nobody uses any form of public transport. Ever
Just moved here and need to get to work? Buy a car or walk. Prepare a 3am alarm if you choose to walk.
Visually impaired? Just buy a car or stay home.
Amputee? Walk
Child of an amputee needing to get to school? Walk.
Yep. Nobody takes any form of public transport. That’s why we have equal number of inhabitants as car parking spaces.

Let’s invite this guy to Luxembourg and ask him to take the tram at 9 AM. We’re packed like sardines in there.
This poster has clearly never taken the train, the tram or the main bus lines in this country (particularly during peak hours)…
Yes, during certain periods of the day, the bus/train/tram might be less than full, but so are the roads at that time of day. I can certainly agree that there is room for improvement, but saying that no one is using is delusion. Honestly during peak hours on the main routes (i.e. towards Esch or Thionville) there couldn’t be more people using public transport on the current infrastructure, the limit is often reached on the trains or buses.
Ranty Mc Ranter had a rant. So what?
*Nobuhdy taKeS the bhuS In Luhxembuh”…*
It’s bs based on whatever Ranty wants to see. I take the bus every day, i have 2 direct connections to my job, every 20 min more or less. Sometimes it is a bit late, sometimes a bit crowded, but the bus/tram/train/funiculaire/elevators that are offered for free in Luxembourg are working well for many people.
Excepted Ranty. For whom we are all **very** sad…
Does this person actually live in Luxembourg? Maybe they live in a village where the bus runs once per hour but uhhh … I don’t have a car and I’ve lived here for almost 3 years. Pretty sure I would have moved almost immediately if it weren’t for public transport here.
In my experience the tram and most buses in the city are well used throughout the day
Let me guess, this person lives in the US. Why should we care about what he thinks is true, guys like him are gullible enough to vote for sex offender.

I am using the public transport every day. I live close to wiltz and work in Luxembourg city. The Busses and Trains are packed during rush hours. There were a few times the bus driver refused to take any more passengers because the new smaller busses/shuttles, we got a few years ago, were too full. There are way too many junkies and hobos just “chilling” in the busses and trains. The Tram is always packed and there are a lot of beggars. Best motivation to get a drivers licence
Our PTS, especially the train system is indeed very unreliable but it really does not matter if the funding comes from tickets or taxes. The system was always heavily subsidized by taxes, making it “free” is just very convenient and the difference barely matters. Some buses are empty during the day, that’s true, but the main lines are overcrowded.
I dont think this person has ever been to Luxembourg, or, if yes, they wanted to commute between Grevels and Munchecker on Sundays at 2.37 a.m.
That being said, public transport can obviously be frustrating if you need to travel from a small village to a specific part of the city, for example, as you might only have one bus per hour and you might need to change 4 times. But if thats you, then you are not the main audience for it. A public transport network can not be very convenient for 100% of the people. Thats unrealistic.
me when i lie
Disagree and out of touch assessment in my opinion. This person should take the tram/bus any morning of any working day to see how “underutilized” it is.
That’s so not true lol
Sure build more car lines, then a couple of year laters build more car lines and so on. I mean, isn’t there enough evidence around the world that more lines isn’t the solution?
I have a good salary (10k>/m). What always prevented me from using public transport in the past, was never the price but the having to deal with buying a ticket. I know people will say “but it was easy to get an M-card” and yes, this is true. Still it’s also fucking easy to just use my car. Now after it is free, I use public transport on a regular basis because I like the ease of not having to think about the ticket. There is no controller waking me up to check my ticket. I don’t have to reload a card.
I will pay for it either way and paying it with my taxes is the most convenient way for me to pay for it without the risk of doing something wrong. I really like the ease of not having to buy a ticket.
It’s for sure a troll. I’d say transit in Luxembourg (and especially in Luxembourg City) works really well.
That’s a troll post. Nobody disses Lux transport unless I meet them in person over here and they happen to feel like birthing about something. Other than that – public services are glorious.
On a more serious note…
There is no such thing as free transport. It’s a service provided by the public administration, which, in turn, is financed by taxes. Just because you don’t pay per ride doesn’t mean you don’t pay. What really shifted is that the burden of financing it is now on everyone, irrespective of whether you use it or not. I’m kinda happy with it. This way the douche that must bring his room sized BMW everywhere also contributes when previously they didn’t (even though they indirectly benefit from it since it reduces road congestion).
I think they’re talking about Luxemburg, Wisconsin 😀
They’ve clearly never been here.
Tram is the simple example how the Luxembourg public transport is helping people every day, I am sure whoever posted the comment never been to Luxembourg.
I’m reading this on the bus I take for my daily commute to work. I can’t complain about the service.
