More than 23,000 Ukrainians have arrived in Ireland

  1. We just need to score points on the Brits and grandstand I thought?……if we’re expected to actually house these people and think even short term planning wise. No one told us.

  2. I’m currently living with one of these Ukranian refugees.
Lovely lad, but he has absolutely no intention of staying in Ireland.
Same with most Ukranians I’ve met.

Which is fair enough, I’d say if the Brits invaded tomorrow and we were forced to emigrate to America or Germany or wherever, most people would be mad to get back home as soon as it was safe again.

  3. I see people saying they’re going to be here permanently. They probably won’t. The vast majority will go home. Look at the Demographics vs. Previous refugee crises. The Ukrainians are mostly women, kids or older men, in the order.

But I dont know how we are going to house them. Presumably there will be double that number in the coming weeks l and it’s not like they’re going to go home in a few weeks. They will be here for a few months at the very least.

  4. I think these people are of course welcome and victims of an unjust war of agression. But we need to have a mature conversation about future waves of migration. There’s no point hand waving it away with “sure we need workers anyways”, or it’s somehow racist to deny them. Or pretending like refugees will some days go back home. They won’t and they haven’t.

All these people will need to be housed, educated provided a decent standard of living as well as accessing services such as counselling or other forms of support. I’ve seen some estimates that it could cost up to 2-5 billion euros to absorb this amount of people.

In my view previous treaties for refugees are outdated legislation drafted back in WWII. The vast majority of them returned to their own countries (or Israel for Jewish people) when Europe was at peace. The UN is very militant for refugee policy but they are not the people who ever have to pay for it or confront its cost

The asylum policy in particular has been hijacked and is openly abused. Refugee is a legal term that is based on some understanding that they will return home some day but this is very unlikely. The Syrians in Ireland are not returning home even though the civil war in Syria is largely over since 2018 (bar the Idlib region). That would be decried as somehow racist but it is literally the definition of the UN law or in the Dublin convention.

The worst mistake we can make in my view is if we follow Swedens approach and go hysterical and cry racism at every turn. These are major changes to Irish society and at no stage has the public been allowed to decide. I think we should be following closely Nordic nations like Denmark and have pathways to full participation in Irish society or transparent definition of rules so it’s clear what a staying in Ireland consists of.

  5. The vast majority will go home. But some will stay.

I have a family staying with me. Lovely people and I am glad to have them in my life. But this situation has been very hard on them.

The son says that before the war 90% of Ukrainians wanted to get the hell out of Ukraine. But now, over 90% want to go home. It took losing it for them to realise how precious it is.

  6. Great but it will cause immense issues for them. Anyone with a decent career or diploma will not be accepted here as it’s a different standard. Meaning they are first of all forced to learn English if they do not speak it already and then will end up in low paying jobs in an expensive country, it’s not the ideal start to a new life it they choose to stay. I’m making great money but even I can’t live careless. So this will definitely be a problem looking into the future. Apart from the housing demand we have already before this… I don’t know why so many , why not to countries with a better infrastructure such as Germany / England / France

  7. Great it’s the least we can do since we are neutral and won’t be sending weapons and hopefully this will force the government to final tackle housing vacancy and allow more modular homes

  8. GDP per capita Ukraine 3,800 US dollars (2020)

GDP per capita ireland 83,800 US dollars (2020)

Plenty will stay. They are welcome as far as i’m concerned. I have no problem seeing my tax euros go towards helping these people but we need to be realistic here too.

  9. In my opinion, people who are saying that the Ukrainians will return to Ukraine are being unrealistic about how long this war will go on for.

  10. this is great news, they’re Europeans, they’ll fit right in and many of them are highly educated and will add to our country. I hope we continue to play our part in this drama – future generations will be proud.

  11. A higher population is a better population. We need to aim for 10m+ population in order to be able to afford a decent quality of infrastructure, such as transport. We’ve too many small towns that nobody wants to stay in. We spend an absolute fortune because of our widely spread small population. Anything that gets us towards that is a good thing.

  12. Whatever works to bring more scarcity to the market and get higher rent prices.

And remember, Goverment pays using your taxes.

And to be clear, I am ok to bring anyone inside, but realistically it’s the worse place to bring them with the housing crisis and an Island far from the area.

  13. I think most will be staying. The war will go on years, they will build their lives here and I’m sure they will be housed properly. Why would they give that up. They will take their family over.

I just don’t understand how we can can keep taking loads in though. There will be other countries that will need help and we will have to take them too.

  14. So we are a country of 5 million people … with a housing crisis … after we boost our population by 1% with the 50,000 we have committed to, when are we getting 1% more houses build , 1% more healthcare capacity, transport infrastructure , schools ?

We have hotels filling up with people. Why are we taking so so many while some NATO countries like the UK and France with populations of 60 million + are not ?
