Heatwave in Greece: Major wildfire forces evacuations in several villages • FRANCE 24 English

As a heat wave swept across southern Europe on Tuesday, in Greece, locals and tourists alike were doing their best to stay cool. We’re trying to survive air conditioning. Can’t wait for the bill. The country’s most famous tourist attraction, the Acropolis, closed for 5 hours on Tuesday as temperatures rose and outdoor workers were ordered indoors. For most people, water and ice cream were the best defense against the heat. But those who had fled to the coast had an extra source of restbite. With lots of water, lots of fluids, we managed to keep going. And a dip in the sea is the best. For me at least, it’s the best. And I recommend it to everyone. We sat in the shade today and we swam a lot every 10 minutes in and out just to refresh ourselves. We drank a lot of water. Greek authorities expect the heatwave to continue until Sunday, but there’s an extra threat looming with a forest fire breaking out in Corinth, west of Athens, forcing several villages to be evacuated.

A heatwave has pushed temperatures to around 40°C (104°F) across much of Greece. A major forest fire broke out near the city of Corinth on 22 July, prompting the evacuation of several villages.
