Newly released video from an August 2022 traffic stop shows Bryan Kohberger telling police he’s “ obviously an honest person ” three months before he brutally murdered four University of Idaho students for reasons that remain unknown.

Kerry Carpenter hit a two-run homer and drove in three runs, Chris Paddack threw six solid innings in his Detroit debut and the Tigers beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 7-2. The AL Central-leading Tigers have won four straight games, coming off a 1-12 slump. Detroit may make moves before the trade deadline on Thursday to bolster its chances of winning the franchise’s first World Series since 1984. Arizona has lost five straight, matching its longest losing streak of the season.

BOISE, Idaho — When Bryan Kohberger was sentenced to four terms of life in prison on July 23 for the killings of four University of Idaho students, the judge and lead prosecutor noted that it would be the last anyone saw or heard from the 30-year-old convicted murderer who had agreed to a pl…

An Idaho sheriff’s office has released body-worn camera footage showing Bryan Kohberger during a traffic stop that occurred months before he killed four University of Idaho students in 2022. The video was released by the Latah County Sheriff’s Office on Tuesday. The video shows an August 2022 traffic stop, when Deputy Darren Duke pulled Kohberger over for speeding on a highway that runs between Moscow, Idaho, and Pullman, Washington. Kohberger is driving the same white Hyundai Elantra that police say he drove on Nov. 13, 2022, when he killed Ethan Chapin, Xana Kernodle, Maddie Mogen and Kaylee Goncalves in a rental home near the University of Idaho campus.

Atlanta promised to house all residents of an encampment where a homeless man was fatally injured earlier this year, but advocates say the city fell short. The resulting tension between advocates and the city illuminates the complexities of getting people off the streets in a city that has been crushed by the nation’s affordable housing crisis and where homelessness continues to surge. The city originally offered housing to 14 people living in the encampment but agreed to house more after residents and advocates said there were at least 30. But eight were living in a hotel paid for by advocates.

The Pittsburgh Pirates are trading Gold Glove-winning third baseman Ke’Bryan Hayes to Cincinnati for veteran reliever Taylor Rogers and shortstop prospect Sammy Stafura, according to a person with knowledge of the deal. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the trade was not official. The 28-year-old Hayes gives the Reds an elite defender at the hot corner who is under contract for the rest of the decade. The 20-year-old Stafura, a second-round pick by the Reds in 2023, is considered one of the better prospects in Cincinnati’s system.

President Donald Trump’s planned announcement of a new private health tracking system to help patients access their health records and monitor wellness is raising a host of privacy concerns. The system, a collaboration between the federal government and Big Tech, aims to allow seamless sharing of medical records among doctors, hospitals, and health apps. More details are expected at a White House event later Wednesday. Patient advocates and ethicists worry about how health information could be used. Digital privacy advocates are skeptical about data security, fearing the monetization of sensitive health information.

After months of speculation about her political future, former Vice President and San Francisco Bay Area native Kamala Harris has ruled out one option: governor of California.

Mets slugger Juan Soto wasn’t in New York’s lineup for a series finale against the San Diego Padres after fouling a ball off the top of his left foot a night earlier. Manager Carlos Mendoza says Soto is “better but still sore. Getting treatment. We’ll see where we’re at.” The manager added that Soto will get in the batting cages to see if he could pinch-hit. Jeff McNeil is in the lineup in right field as the NL East-leading Mets tried to avoid being swept. The team announced that Soto had a bruised foot and that X-rays were negative.

Bessent says child savings accounts in Trump law are 'a back door for privatizing Social Security'

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has described a children’s savings program in President Trump’s recent tax package as a “back door for privatizing Social Security.” He made the comment at a forum hosted by Breitbart News. Democrats quickly reacted, suggesting the GOP aims to revive efforts to privatize the retirement program. The new program, called Trump Accounts, allows for savings accounts for babies born in the U.S. with a potential $1,000 deposit. These accounts can grow over time. Bessent’s remarks have reignited debate over a politically sensitive issue that Republicans have largely avoided for years.

AUSTIN — Texas Republicans appear to be poised to follow through on a congressional redistricting plan filed Wednesday that would flip five Democratic seats to Republican control.

At least 37 Palestinians were killed while seeking aid in the Gaza Strip, according to a local hospital.

An Ohio city whose Haitian migrants were disparaged by President Donald Trump last year as he pitched voters on his plans for an immigration crackdown is now bracing to defend them against possible deportation. A group of community members, clergy and Haitian leaders in Springfield gathered this week for several days of training sessions as they prepare to support potential deportees and provide them refuge. But Pastor Carl Ruby said organizers would rather persuade the Trump administration to reverse its decision to terminate legal protections provided for hundreds of thousands of Haitians in the U.S. under temporary protected status.

Former Vice President Kamala Harris says she won’t run for California governor in 2026.

Former Vice President Kamala Harris says she will not run for California governor next year, leaving open the possibility that she could mount a third run for the White House in 2028. The Democrat’s decision, announced Wednesday, extends a guessing game about her political future that started after she lost last year’s presidential election to Donald Trump. She has not ruled out another run for president, after unsuccessful bids in 2020 and 2024. It’s not known when she will make that decision.

Even though, Trey Hendrickson and the Cincinnati Bengals remain at odds when it comes to reaching a contract extension, the All-Pro defensive end felt it was more important to be with teammates as they prepare for the upcoming season. Hendrickson was dressed in all back and wasn’t wearing his No. 91 jersey, but he was keeping a keen eye on the defense’s workouts and was giving pointers to first-round pick Shemar Stewart. Hendrickson missed the first seven days and five practices of camp, accumulating $350,000 in fines. He also received total of $104,768 in fines for not attending the three days of the Bengals’ mandatory minicamp in June. When it comes to reaching an extension, Hendrickson said that “nothing’s really changed.”

A person briefed on Buffalo Bills rookie cornerback Maxwell Hairston’s injury says the first-round draft pick has been diagnosed with a sprained lateral collateral ligament in his right knee. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the team is off and hasn’t provided an update on Hairston’s injury since he was hurt in practice Tuesday. NFL.com first reported the diagnosis. The injury isn’t as severe as initially feared. Hairston will, however, miss valuable practice time and preseason experience as he competes for a starting job opposite Christian Benford.

A new report from Indeed reveals that tech job postings in July were down 36% from early 2020 levels. While AI is a factor, it’s not the sole reason for the decline. ChatGPT’s debut in late 2022 coincided with the end of a pandemic-era hiring surge, complicating AI’s role in the slowdown. Many tech CEOs have cited AI as a reason for layoffs, aiming to signal efficiency to Wall Street. Economists note that AI might replace some jobs but will also create new opportunities. Entry-level tech jobs have been hit hardest, especially in areas overlapping with AI’s strengths.

Officials are warning people to stay away from beaches and waterways in a small California city near the border with Oregon that has observed dozens of tsunamis, including one that turned deadly more than 60 years ago. Officials said at a briefing Wednesday that no injuries had been reported, but a dock at the city’s harbor was damaged. City Manager Eric Wier says it was a long night with a lot of uncertainty, but the city didn’t see flooding. He says the downtown is high enough that it was open Wednesday morning. Wier and other officials stressed that conditions may be improving, but it isn’t yet safe to head to the beach because there were still dramatic tide fluctuations.

Police say a city councilmember in Virginia was set on fire by a man who entered a local magazine office. Investigators say Wednesday the attack stemmed from a “personal matter” and was unrelated to his politics or work as councilman. Lee Vogler, 38, was an elected official in Danville, Virginia. Police say the suspect entered Vogler’s office, where he works at a local magazine, confronted him and doused him in flammable liquid. Authorities say both men then left the building and the 29-year-old suspect set Vogler on fire.

Red Sox third baseman Alex Bregman sat out Boston’s game Wednesday against the Minnesota Twins to rest the right quadriceps he strained earlier this season. Red Sox manager Alex Cora characterized the move as a precaution, with the third baseman expected back in the lineup Friday against Houston. Cora says “he feels good with the quad, but a bit tired.” Abraham Toro started in Bregman’s place Wednesday at Minnesota. With Boston off on Thursday, the move gives Bregman two days of rest.

Ward says the Titans just aren’t where they need to be but have time to get better. Ward and the Titans have a week to work before a joint practice Aug. 7 on the road against Tampa Bay.

The United States will deploy biometric technologies with Chile to control migration and disrupt criminal networks, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said. The plan, announced Wednesday, comes as the White House seeks to bolster regional cooperation in the fight against transnational criminal groups, such as Tren de Aragua, a notorious Venezuelan gang designated as a foreign terrorist organization by the Trump administration. Tren de Aragua has wreaked havoc across once-peaceful Chile in recent years — smuggling undocumented migrants across borders, running prostitution rings, trafficking drugs and terrorizing the population with grisly crimes. Chile has fought back, bringing a number of gang members to trial in recent months.

It was September 2012 and dozens of residents looked on as police cordoned off the area around a shed just northeast of Detroit. Low whispers about what — or who — officers were searching for grew to excited chatter when the name Jimmy Hoffa started floating around the normally quiet street. By that time, the name had become sort of mythical in and around Detroit. Wednesday marks 50 years since the iron-fisted former Teamsters union boss disappeared from a restaurant north of the city while meeting with mob figures. He has not been seen or heard from since despite scores of tips and multiple searches spanning several states.

During his Senate hearing this month, Plankey wouldn’t directly answer when asked whether the 2020 election was rigged and stolen.

The incident occurred Tuesday during the eighth inning of the Cubs’ 9-3 loss to the Brewers and caused him to exit the game. Happ also had said Tuesday he felt lightheaded as a result of the pain coming from his shin.

Angolan President Joao Lourenco’s office confirmed the deaths in a statement on Wednesday and said that 197 people were also injured in the violence. The two days of protests began on Monday and spread from the capital, Luanda, to at least six other provinces in the southern African nation.
