  1. Brilliant film, can’t imagine what it was like to watch this when it was broadcast in the midst of all the nuclear tensions at the time.

  2. Jaysus no, **warning people against watching this** – I watched it in the 80s when it came out (along with the likes of Testament and The Day After).

The dangers still exist today because now we have even more countries with nuclear weapons.

Edit: this was most realistic as to what will happen if countries start lobbing bombs at each other.

  3. Watched it in three parts. Is quite heavy going, but worth watching.

  4. I own the DVD. Born and raised during the cold war in the Fulda Gap.

Watched it during Corona. Had to have a cigarette break every 15 minutes or so to calm down my nerves.

The Day After and all the other pictures are just tacky Walt Disney productions compared to this master piece.

  5. It doesn’t un nerve me now, it’s all in the post if the looney gets their way

  6. Also check out The War Game (1966). Banned by the BBC when it was made, it’s very much in the same vein- in fact threads can be said to be the remake. It’s equally horrific, and equally riveting, though it’s hard to find.

  7. This is weapons grade viewing… which is exactly why I recommended it to my mate for a date night film 😀 World was a different place before online movie reviews.

  8. Jesus… had to watch this at school in year nine. Absolutely terrified me and all my classmates. Rewatched a couple of years ago and I think it made me feel even worse the second time round. Brilliant film, will not be revisiting again

  9. Topical viewing, the Americans just shipped fresh nuclear weapons to the UK apparently

  10. Good film but has nothing on Graveyard of the Fireflies when it comes to traumatising.

  11. I watched this the other day and there were some scenes in this that genuinely terrified me like no other film had done before. Like pure dread

    Enjoy it!

  12. Watched this once… Never again … Until Kier Starmer finally ruins everything and we end up going through it for real.

  13. Grim AF and exactly how I would imagine this to play out- it’s a distressing watch, but worth it, especially given that we were potentially on the verge of WWIII a few months ago- some say it has already started.

And it’s no coincidence that billionaires have already built luxury bunkers.

  14. The less successful sequel, *”Wool”*, portrays the chaos of a world where sheep shear themselves in protest – and burn their fleece – bringing the Aran jumper industry to it’s knees.

  15. Crikey no! It was on BBC4 a few months ago when it was shown for the first time since the original showing. Silly me thought, ‘ how bad could an early 1980’s drama be?’ I expected sets that wobbled and laughable effects. Boy was I wrong! I made it about half way through before deciding that I didn’t want the images and scenes in my minds eye for weeks – maybe even inhabiting my dreams.

Technically, a superb bit of filmmaking with excellent acting and really good parallel storylines. But my goodness, it really is a tough watch! I was much too young to see it the first time round when I would have been barely a teenager but very much aware of the CND encampments and ’99 Red Balloons’ or ‘Two Tribes’ on Top of the Pops. So I knew about what was happening however watching it (half of it) a couple of months ago, really brought it home. What life would have become if the worst happened.

Utterly horrifying so watch it at your peril as it really will remain with you for some time to come. 😮🫣🥹😭

Greetings from the peace and serenity of Northern Scotland. 👋😔⛰️🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

  16. I watched this a while back, honestly, nothing in it traumatised me tbph.

  17. I first saw this in my 30s and it fucked with my mind for weeks. Just looked and it’s there on iPlayer, no age verification required, for all to watch. Should have edited it to include a boob so the BBC would be forced to protect kids from seeing it.

  18. thank you OP, I’ve actually been meaning to get around to watching this 🙂

  19. No, dont think I’ll watch this again. I saw it when it came.out in the 80s and it scared the bejaysus out of me. I remember the American post nuclear war film – ‘the day after’, but.my God threads was in a different league

  20. Absolutely brilliant film!

They should do a remake of this for modern times. Somehow I think the outcome would be ten times worse for the characters.

  21. I’ve described this as the greatest film I’ll never watch again. But it’s so well crafted, I’ve still came back to it three times despite the horror show I k own im in for.

In my mind I describe it as 1hr 40 mins of cold sweating terror, only broken up by 30 seconds of going “oh look, it’s zak dingle from emmerdale”.

    Brilliant film.

  22. I know it’s not but I always thought the traffic warden here looks a ringer for Kenneth Branagh.
