International affairs editor Ketavan Gorgeani is with me. Kavan, how significant is this move? Well, look, uh, obviously just concretely, there’s not going to be an immediate consequence. We’re not going to see a subpoena right away because they are now drafting that subpoena. Then it’s going to have to be delivered. So, it’s going to take some time to actually bear fruit, but that doesn’t mean that it’s not very significant in the vote. There are two main reasons why that it’s significant. You mentioned the vote tally 8-2 with three Republicans joining the the Democrats. This is a subcommittee because the Republicans are in power that is dominated by Republicans. So the fact that this motion actually went through uh this subcommittee with the help of Republicans is significant in itself. And when you look at the names of the Republicans who voted for that subpoena, these are by no means centrist or moderate uh Republicans. These are hardcore MAGA, Make America Great Again, proTrump uh representatives who very rarely break with the president, with the White House on any subject matter. Uh the second reason why it’s pretty significant is uh because of that recess uh that is uh already uh underway now. Uh this recess was supposed to uh be happening at the end of this week. It actually started a day earlier yesterday, right after that vote because the speaker of the house, Mike Johnson, decided to call recess ahead of time very openly and clearly to avoid a vote, a push for a full vote on the House floor about the Epstein files, specifically hoping that probably this controversy and this headache for the White House will sort of die down through the summer. But clearly what we’re seeing is that uh the the opposite is actually happening. This story is not going away. There’s a slow drip drip of every few days something bringing it back in the news and uh the division amongst Republicans is only growing with some being very vocal uh telling the White House this is not how you’re supposed to do it. We need more information. and those like Mike Johnson who are trying to sort of uh cover or help out the White House with this headache. And the story is uh going to stay in uh the news at least for the next few weeks because we already have also uh the uh House Oversight Committee. So the full committee that also voted to subpoena Gileain Maxwell, the then girlfriend of Jeffrey Epstein who was serving a time 20 years in prison. She is going to supposedly be deposed on August 11th and will have maybe a lot to say about these files. All to come, Kangan Gorani, thanks very much. Our international affairs editor
