Prince Harry has openly expressed his eagerness to mend the strained relationship with King Charles and other members of The Firm. But a discreet exchange with a Royal confidant could potentially come back to haunt him.
A peace meeting between senior aides representing both the King and his son made headlines last week. It appeared to show steps towards a reconciliation.
This gathering occurred shortly after the Duke’s explosive BBC interview in which he stated that his father “won’t speak to him”. This, he says, is down to the bitter legal dispute over his security entitlements while in the UK.
Harry has spoken about the prolonged rift within his family, remarking: “There is no point in continuing to fight anymore, life is precious.”
In an unexpected twist, the Duke mentioned “I don’t know how much longer my father has,” alluding to Charles’ cancer diagnosis, reports the Mirror.
The prince acknowledged that “some members of my family will never forgive me” for penning his controversial memoir Spare. He said: “It would be nice to have that reconciliation part now. If they don’t want that, that’s entirely up to them.”
Although Harry claims he is “ready to forgive,” his frustration was reportedly evident during his father’s Coronation, as a lip-reading expert revealed a tense conversation between Harry and his cousin, the trusted Royal ally Princess Eugenie.
A new Channel 5 programme, Lip-Reading The Royals: The Secret Conversations, has revealed a plethora of private Royal exchanges at significant events, with Prince Harry among those featured.
At the Coronation ceremony in 2023, Harry appeared isolated on the steps of Westminster Abbey, having returned to British soil without his wife Meghan and their children. As the Royal family congregated at the close of the ceremony, it was evident that tensions were still running high.
Approaching Princess Eugenie, one of the few royals he has maintained a close relationship with, a lip reader suggests Harry expressed frustration: “I’ve spent five hours with my dad in his office and not a friendly text from either”.
The identity of who failed to message Harry – whether Charles and Camilla or William and Kate – remains unclear, but it seems communication with his brother has been scarce for years.
According to the lip reader, Harry is then seen questioning, “Why hasn’t anybody contacted me?” to which Eugenie reportedly offers a sympathetic yet restrained smile.
This revelation follows another disclosed conversation from the show, this time between Harry and Meghan during a Service of Remembrance at Westminster Abbey in 2018, a mere six months following their lavish nuptials at Windsor Castle.
The Sussexes attended the solemn event alongside the full Royal family, including the late Queen Elizabeth II, to pay tribute to fallen service members and commemorate the Centenary of the Armistice.
The documentary delved into a moment where Harry and Meghan, as they sat awaiting the start of a ceremony, engaged in a deep conversation, with Meghan posing a significant question to Harry.
Lip reading expert Nicola Hickling interpreted their exchange for the show, alleging that Meghan told Harry to “take advantage of the situation”, then glanced around at the assembly of royals encircling them.
According to Hickling, Harry’s reaction to her statement was to ask: “Today?”, to which Meghan replied: “Do it tonight.”
Following this, Harry is said to have questioned Meghan further, saying: “You do realise that this is the end?” and Meghan acknowledged: “Yeah, I do know”.
Royal historian Dr Tessa Dunlop then suggested that these intimate remarks between the Sussexes might indicate that they had been considering their dramatic departure from Royal duties long before they officially stepped back.
