“controversial plans that would give ministers new powers to determine the remit of the independent watchdog that oversees UK elections.”
If the ministers have significant powers over an “independent watchdog” it kind of makes the first word pointless.
They have been successfully dismantling and adjusting many aspects of the state already so its good this was stopped but its also a drop in the ocean of the Conservatives asserting dominant control over every check and balance.
Even if you support the Tories. I don’t understand how watching them dismantling every check on their power isnt a red flag for even the biggest supporters.
The removal of the rights to protest, this article here countless other bills they are passing or have tried to pass. It’s just not necessary unless you have a sinister goal.
Yet another example of the unelected House of Lords protecting our society from overreaching democratically elected MPs. It’s strange it’s that way around, but it does seem to be a pattern.
I guess these are the real reasons most conservative MPs will back Boris’ government to the end. They’re brazenly trying to force through all sorts of draconian and undemocratic laws as fast as they can.
