A lot of Irish people (and indeed other Europeans) who choose to live in the UAE, Qatar, Bahrain or Saudi Arabia theoretically are pro-democracy, pro-feminism, pro-gay rights, anti-slavery, anti-religious bigotry, anti-sheltering of crime lords etc. but the moment they see the money those beliefs go out the window.
I don’t particularly care if people choose to support these regimes by choosing to live there, everyone has to make peace with what constitutes morality in their own mind. What I do loath is those whom are brazen hypocrites about it. If you go to work as a teacher/pilot/financial executive etc. supporting these regimes you need to shut the f up about pretending that sexism, racism, homophobia, religious bigotry and slavery mean anything to you when money enters the conversation.
If money is more important than principles to you, fine but at least be honest about it.

I’d have no interest in the place. Too hot (place is basically a desert) and too conservative. I’d prefer some place with a bit of real history attached to it.
Lived in Dubai for 10 years… it’s a great spot. It’s nothing like Saudi which everyone here seems to think. A lot of misconceptions going on.
Yeah I’m never going to the middle east, mainly because of the stories about women being raped and then they get punished by the law for having sexual relations outside of marriage or while they are married….like rape isn’t even a thing…or like people being arrested because some random falsely accused them of being homosexual etc.
On an individual level you’ll find lovely and nice people all over the world…but I’m not taking any chances with the middle east.
Worst nightmare is being arrested in a different country for something I didn’t do and having years of my life stolen because some corrupt dickhead wanted his pay day from me.
