Anyways I’m looking for an affordable WG or something on WG Gesucht but it’s either one of these
– the landowners don’t answer
– it’s only for men (usually the cheap ones I like to get into)
– it has age restrictions like wdym 25+

They say it’s really hard to find apartments in Würzburg so they suggest starting early. But people say nobody is going to rent without meeting in person.

I’m currently in my home country and my lectures start in October. At this point, I’ll just see where it goes.

For those who had same issue, how did you manage to find apartments before or after you came in Germany, to do your registration within 14 days and so weiter?

  1. Plottwist: they are actually looking for a husband.

  2. I would not recommend fraternities for various reasons, it’s a very weird place to live.

Nevertheless, there are WGs that do online interviews, so don’t worry too much about not being there in person.

And as always, the easiest way to get a place is to increase your budget… I am sorry.

  3. 10 person shared apartment 😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫

  4. In a town like Würzburg, many of these kind of ads (only men, 10+ people) will be for Studentenverbindungen/Burschenschaften, so don’t bother.
What worked for me (not from abroad, but had to search a flat from across country without having time to visit) was to check the university’s site. Usually they have a „Wohnungsbörse“ (housing bazar) or similar, where private owners advertise their flats.

  5. When I first translated the flaschenpost.de website, the browser translated wine to “crying”

  6. I don’t live in Würzburg so I have no specific knowledge about the market, but it seems to be rather tense. Be aware that the ones only for men with are mostly fraternities who take the fraternity part serious (“Studentenverbindungen” or rather “Burschenschaften”), so the low price comes with strings attached. Send me a dm if you need more infos on that!

  7. lmao thanks for the chuckle OP
Wish you lots of luck with the apartment search!

  8. I agree with everyone here: avoid fraternities! Go through your university’s international office. At ours they will usually set those who just arrived up with a dorm for at least a semester so they can look for housing whole in the city.

  9. Regarding the 14 days for registration: don’t stress too much. I was literally unable to even get an appointment in the span of two months after moving there (Darmstadt in my case, might be similar in Würzburg)

  10. A lot of frats (its its own… strange culture. Very conservative/rightleaning at best often) publish ad’s with extremely cheap rooms on WG Gesucht (and others), not advertising that they are, in fact, a frat.

    Warning signs are:

    – 10+ people

    – only men, looking for men

    – Super low room prices (less than 300, sometimes as low as 100/month), but costs for e.g. using the shower being extra.

Edit: Also “Apartment Sizes” that are definitely a house. Very few WGs that are not frats share a whole house.

  11. Hey, Würzburger here! If your lectures only start in October, you’re pretty early in looking for an apartment anyway. Normally, most students don’t leave their rooms until September, so there are going to be way more offers when that comes around. Also, the really cheap ones are fraternities, of which there are a lot in Würzburg. I wouldn’t recommend them.

  12. Are they gay and looking for a husband? Interesting story !!!

  13. One husband for nine men?! I think I’ve seen this film…

  14. Widen your search area. I had to do that to find a place and eventually got lucky in a small city/village near Darmstadt where i study. Its around 30~40 mins away though and i just had to accept that coz i couldnt find anything near my Hochschule. What i learned is that you need to tell the story of your life when you apply for a wg, perhaps have a profile pic, share hobbies, show interest in mutual activities with them coz they like to play sports, party, hang out or spend time together socializing. Try to make the application customized coz they hate copy/paste. Its a fucking headache how Germans run their WGs honestly but good luck on your search.

  15. Be careful man. I was searching for a room in Hamburg and there are so many scams. Sometimes they say they are in a different country and will mail you the keys after signing a contract and paying a deposit. Sometimes they meet and show you a random airbnb and ask you to pay a deposit. Finding a room is hard.

  16. Are you ready to be that Husband?…jokes apart, 500sqm for 10 people doesn’t sound too bad….
