Tehran On OTT: John Abraham Starrer SKIPS Theatrical Release, To Premiere Digitally On This Date (Images credit: Instagram)
Tehran, which has been inspired by real events, is forgoing a theatrical release and will premiere directly on OTT. Produced by Dinesh Vijan, Sandeep Leyzell, and Shobhna Yadav, the long-delayed film set in Iran will finally release on Zee5 during Independence Week. The trailer for Tehran is expected to be revealed on August 1. Here’s all you need to know about the upcoming film.
John Abraham’s Tehran to premiere in August 2025
The streaming platform Zee5 announced the premiere of the film with the caption, “Dilli mein ek blast ne sirf ek embassy nahi, ek soye hue junoon ko jaga diya. #Tehran Coming this Independence Week, on #ZEE5. #TehranOnZEE5.” A new-look poster featuring John Abraham has the tagline, “Hunted by Iran. Abandoned by Israel. Deserted by India.” A bearded and bloodied John is peeking behind a column that has the cityscape of Tehran on the side.
Co-written by Ritesh Shah and Ashish Prakash Verma, Tehran is a geopolitical thriller based on the Russo-Ukrainian war and other real-life events. Manushi Chhillar, Neeru Bajwa, and Elnaaz Norouzi co-star with John in the action film, while Madhurima Tuli plays John’s wife. Director Gopalan’s previous film was Tariq (2024).

Originally announced in February 2022, Tehran was supposed to be released on Republic Day 2023. The film wrapped up filming in October 2022. In a 2022 interview with Filmfare, lead actor John had shared, “If you’re invested in the Russia-Ukraine crisis, wonder what China is doing, what Iran is doing, where does Palestine fit in this whole thing, Tehran is about all of this. It’s a stunning film.”
After Tehran, John has the superhero film Munkeeman, Garam Masala 2, and Rohit Shetty’s Rakesh Maria biopic in the pipeline. Rumours of a spinoff on his Pathaan character Jim also persist.
