I’m with the government on 90% of those petitions tbf
I love the layers of this. A reddit post of a tumblr post of a bluesky post.
Most of those screenshots have less than 100k signatures, so what did they expect?
That site is a waste of tax payer funds.
* “Tax the richest age group of people in the country (pensioners) less” I love tax breaks for the rich
* “Prioritise peat over the fate of the planet” Planet > peat
* “Trigger a general election every time a manifesto pledge isn’t kept” Are you high
Some of these are very silly and I’m glad they said no.
Others they replied to with “we already do that you tool” like:
>**The Government is clear that all patients, including transgender patients, deserve to be treated with compassion, dignity and respect when in the receipt of NHS services**. The NHS provides a comprehensive service available to all and will continue to treat all transgender patients in need of care.
apart from the wildlife/environmental suggestions, most would be too chaotic and not viable anyway.
Serious question, has any petition actually resulted in a change of government policy?
Feels like it’s just a phony way for the little people to vent their frustrations in a safe and controlled manner
I love how so many of the responses start with “the government has no plans to…”
Yes, that’s why we’re petitioning you, we’re asking you to make those plans.
The funniest thing is that half of petitions I agree with, half I think are dumb, but the government is just all around dedicated to doing absolutely fuck all for anyone
Some of these may sound like good ideas on the face of it but are either a) already built into existing legislation in some form or another, b) unworkable or c) stupid.
I love this post
It’s fucked up completely. There are meant to serve the people. It’s just gone so out of control and nobody cares. Like no one is doing anything about it. Other than sign this they say no and that’s it. This is our fucking lives they are messing with
It’s mostly about getting it into parliament and the news cycle.
It’s almost as if interacting with government resources is totally fucking pointless.
This is so true, technically they can say they’re doing good by giving us a petition but it’s no use if literally no petition ever had resulted in anything
Illusion of Democracy
There should be a law where if a petition reaches a certain number of signatures, it goes to public vote.
A lot of the responses start off like
>The government currently has no plans to do this, and anyway we don’t think it’s necessary…
yeah no fucking shit that’s why people felt the need to petition for it.
I don’t think this is true. The top two after the internet one are “deport em forunurs” and “we don’t like labour, call election now”.
“we have no plans to..”
We know!, this petition is to get the ball rolling on you making plans to do these things
Nobody expects this to take 5 minutes or have a plan in place on day one
Fuck the entire petition system, It exists to just make people feel like they’re being listened to
You are not being listened to though. Only the UK with a tool that appears to be democratic actually be used to suppress people’s opinions
Petition to change the law so that they have to explain *why* they reject or accept petitions rather than just saying they accept or reject them?
The ‘delay ringing the emergency services’ one getting dismissed like that was very sad, for me.
The petition was started by the family of a woman called Kimberley McAssey, who was probably murdered by a guy called Ryan Sheridan, in my local area. And Ryan delayed ringing the emergency services for over a day while this poor woman rotted in his bed. The coroner simply could not confirm a cause of death because of this unnecessary delay. Then his mum came round and they went out for some sandwiches before they called the police.
He made some noises about how she might’ve had a bad reaction to some MDMA. The guy was already in trouble for strangling his ex. He’s got away with it. He’s in jail now for some class A drug supply but he’s gonna be out soon. He is absolutely unwelcome back here, he’d better find some other town to live in.
The poor McAssey family really put their heart and soul into getting this petition put in front of as many faces as possible and getting people to sign it. They deserve better than a ‘no’.
I also hope the people on Sheridan’s wing know who he is. Monster.
As usual we have the illusion of a voice.
Some of these are so crazy impractical though, it would show how screwed we would be if we just let the general public make the laws.
“Pay every pensioner a full time 35 hour week wage”, we can barely manage our current social security bill. This would be impractical without a huge ramp up in taxes and/or cuts to other services people would then complain about.
It channels dissent off the streets and into actionless apathy. A tool for the government to give the people the illusion of having a voice while criminalising action, vocal or otherwise.
To be fair, some of the example petitions are pretty bad:
> Hold a referendum before joining defence pacts
> Make it a crime to delay ringing emergency services
> Make breaking a manifesto pledge illegal
> Require MPs who mislead the public to resign
> Allow the general public to have a complete recall election whenever they want
In particular 3 and 4 are how dictatorships typically operate, by legislating what the truth is. 5 is a recipe for catastrophic governance because now no governments will ever do unpopular but necessary things. 1 is downright insane.
Kinda sounds like that guy fawkes fella was onto something
And this children is why you don’t surrender your rights
I have an idea: We stop voting for people who don’t do what we tell them to do.
I know, it’s radical and crazy, but … think about it.
People need to be way more involved in politics.
You missed the part where the question they’re asking the government is something racist/or petty.
