Call to simplify Scottish disability benefits system

  1. We cant afford to double the number of people on disability payment

Making a recommendation without considering the economic cost is completely pointless.

This report should be put in the bin and never considered again.

  2. Considering you can have someone who works for Social Security Scotland literally turn up at your door to walk you through the application, I don’t see how you can make it much easier.

  3. “As it stands, the number of people claiming the payment is forecast to grow from 379,000 in 2024-25 to 703,000 in 2030-31.”

I think the question shouldn’t be how do we make it easier BUT why is the above happening on a population that has roughly been about 5-6million for the last 100 years!

We cannot have 20% plus of the population disabled.

  4. Hi. Im one of the several thousand people with lived experience of claiming benefits who helped SG design the new system. Its straightforward to claim, supports are available both through SG and via. DPO’s and other organisations. Not sure what needs simplified, we literally debated language choice, length of form, jargon, punitive measures, 3rd party reporting, variability of conditions etc…years of work from volunteers like me (we were collectively the Scottish Experience Panels) who had a bad experience with DWP and how we could avoid that here…

  5. Yeah I had an accident 4 years ago. That left me out of work and claiming under the Scottish government was so simple and straightforward, add to that I am autistic and have huge meltdowns when it comes to filling out paperwork or doing most things online in general, super helpful and lovely people

  6. The report said that “the Scottish approach to assessments was “significantly more compassionate” than the DWP system it replaced.

She said it was “kinder in tone and more dignified in approach”.”

But you wouldn’t know that from the headline.

  7. I’m from Ontario, Canada and on the Ontario Disability Support Program, I’m just curious how your system works? Is it 440 pounds a month and that’s it? Is there a rent portion? I get $1800 Canadian a month, $960 for my rent and $840 for my food. My electricity is included in my rent. Cost of living here is high but I still get enough every month that I can put money away into a savings account.
