  1. “2024 marks the second time just one spelling of the Muhammad has topped the charts, although when all thirty-plus iterations are grouped together it has been the most common for over a decade, the Daily Mail’s analysis suggests.”

  2. Not exactly what I’d call positive date for our cultural identity…

  3. Why don’t all the Christians agree to call their male children one single biblical name, like John?

  4. To be clear.. what do people think “British” names are? Because I am not seeing many Hamish, Cameron, or Stuarts on that list……

  5. Jayden would be at the top but then Kayden came along and split the vote.

  6. Wish it was like the good old days when every baby in the UK was called Barry

  7. The best takeaway from this is how Amelia spikes massively right after GoT aired it’s first season.

  8. Muhammad is the most common name on the planet, its not like its that surprising lol

  9. Matter of time when second one will be Ali, Ahmed or w/e, after Muhammad.

  10. Obligatory: this is the most common first name. This does not mean most of the babies born were named Muhammad.

Culturally, Muhammad is often used as a prefix, which technically becomes the first name but the person may not go by that name in their day to day life.

For example, someone named Muhammad Faisal Khan, is probably called Faisal by their friends and family.

  11. So I looked at the timeline they have on the website, and if I’m understanding it right this whole situation makes a bit more sense to me, though its a little misleading in a typically Daily Mail sort of way.

Its done so the leading name is always the most full bar at the top, but the upper x axis changes values as it goes. At the start in 1996 it ranges are 5000, 10’000 but by 2024 its only 2000, 4000. So even though Muhammad is in a massive lead in 2024, it wouldn’t even make the top 10 list when the timeline starts in 1996.

Kinda just looks like that there’s just been more and more diversity in baby names as the years go by with no signs of stopping, and we’re currently at its height. More people are just calling their kids odd shit these days.

And after a quick Google it looks like there was around 100’000 more births in 1996 than 2024. So you might look at those numbers and think that there would probably be more variation, since there’s more kids, but there wasn’t.

I’m not totally convinced this says anything about our cultural identity, other than we’re just getting a bit more creative with naming our sprogs.

  12. This will be the case for the next 30+ years in a row. Wake me up when the number one spot is “John”.

  13. It is no suprise, the bias is towards it being tradition to name everyone mohammed -> somthing -> something
Contra western traditions of having a somewhat unique name.

  14. Need a petition to change national anthem to Allah save the king

  15. Ok, so now it is in plain sight, surely now the radical left can see the problems we are facing, right?

  16. Genuinely didn’t realise people still misunderstood the reasons why Muhammed consistently tops the UK name lists.

Reddit used to feel like an intelligent place compared to other sm platforms, but it’s definitely getting dumber.
