Thai-Cambodian border clashes: Trump threatens to withhold trade deals until ceasefire • FRANCE 24

Let’s head to the border between Thailand and Cambodia where there appears to be an off ramp to a deepening conflict for the past 4 days. Uh while playing rounds of golf in Tbury, President Trump has been updating his social media about the ongoing conflict said he’s been speaking to the Thai acting prime minister and the Cambodian leader and says he’s told him to quickly work out a ceasefire and end the long-standing territorial dispute. one that’s seen more than 100,000 people displaced, one that’s seen more than 30 people killed. His leverage is t trade tariffs which stands at more than 30% for both countries with both countries also having been highly dependent on US export for years. We’re hearing from Thailand and Cambodia in statements issued to state media thanking President Trump and saying that both countries will attend peace talks in Malaysia tomorrow. Welcome to the border where we can hear from our correspondent Tommy Walker on the situation there. Thailand and Cambodia’s armed border conflict enters a fourth day. This morning, Thailand accused Cambodia of firing into Serin Province as early as 4:00 a.m. attacking civilian areas. There has been exchange since then and sounds of incoming and outgoing artillery along the border. Thailand’s government in a press conference this afternoon did condemn Cambodia’s attacks, calling them indiscriminate and a violation of international law. In Surin, where this attack happened, there are people recovering in hospital from previous attacks and previous injuries. Ponan Shinowat visited this hospital making the journey from Bangkok. The suspended prime minister looked emotional when she left the ward after speaking to some of the patients. And after all, Serin is one of the most affected because of this conflict. They have the second highest number of civilian casualties. However, there is signs of progress. In recent hours, a meeting between Thailand’s caretaker Prime Minister Puntam and Cambodia’s Prime Minister Hmanet has been announced for Monday. Whether that will lead to peace remains to be seen, but for the hundreds of thousands of Thai evacuees languishing in makeshift evacuation centers, they’re asking when they can go home. And until the ceasefire has been declared, the conflict will continue.

Thai and Cambodian leaders will meet in Malaysia for talks to end hostilities, a spokesperson for the Thai prime minister’s office said on Sunday. This comes following pressure from U.S. President Donald Trump to end a deadly border dispute, now in its fourth day, which has killed at least 34 people and displaced more than 168,000. Details by FRANCE correspondent in Si Saket, Tommy Walker.

  1. Fingers crossed for the talk tomorrow. Both countries will of course try to put forth their demands. Hopefully, their differences can be settled. Peace to all from Bangkok

  2. Thailand is robber and always afraid of international court of justice.
All four countries neighboring Thailand had bordering problems with Thailand. The question is why ?
Because Thailand rob and stealing from neighboring countries

  3. The U.S. media reported that the Huione Group and its affiliates had laundered more than $4 billion. Fearing they might lose their popularity among Cambodian citizens, the family is using nationalism—particularly by provoking tensions with Thailand—as a tool to regain support and maintain their power to govern Cambodia.

The issue between Thailand and Cambodia will never be fully resolved as long as Cambodia continues to adhere to the ancient 1:200,000 map created by the French that Cambodian government use as an evidence to claim more land all the time, while Thailand insists on using our 1: 50,000 map.

Using 1:200,000 map, Cambodian government urges Thailand to go to ICJ aiming to get the same result like last time when they get Khao Pra Viharn.

The citizens of both countries continue to argue with each other on social media claiming lands, costume, culture, etc. We actually should think ‘what in it for us’ in this dramatic power game.

  4. The rocket attacks on the civilians are part of their own plan, not Cambodia. Thai is using this as an excuse to partly do that, because Boonsin actually need to do that and Thailand also. He know what he is doing because every step has been fairly well calculated and it is just incited and built it up. it is the plan in this on the Thai side. It is definitely under control what will goin on.

  5. Thailand does not respect the mediation effort from President Donald Trump.

    Be justice for Cambodia!
The government, military and people of Cambodia want peace.

But for Thailand, its military leaders have been provoking the war.
Thailand still opens fire on Cambodia land.

  6. I hope a ceasefire can be reached soon. Both Thai and Cambodian people need to focus on peace and allow the governments to handle the situation, so our brave soldiers no longer have to suffer and can return safely to their families.

Let people go back to their homes, return to work, and live peacefully.

This brief conflict should be enough to remind us of the value of peace—no more lives should be lost. It's not wrong to love our nations, but we are human beings, and we can choose dialogue and peaceful solutions over violence.

We are ASEAN members and should treat each other as siblings. We are Asians. We are all humans—of the same species.

    Peace.

  7. “We have a situation today in which the Thai military is making its own foreign policy against Cambodia. The Thai civilian government has no control over the army at all,” said Paul Wesley Chambers, a visiting fellow at the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies in Singapore (quoted from an NBC News article).

The Thai military has staged 22 coups (13 successful, 9 failed according to ChatGPT) since 1932, one of the most frequent coups in the world.

It’s now like an adult beating up a child and doesn’t want any third party to be involved.

  8. Meeting will be held in Malaysia, the most reliable country in this entire world. See Ukraine war; despite meeting after meeting
the war still continue on. Maybe Ukraine war cease fire meeting should also be held in Malaysia.

  9. President Trump and the international community, as a concerned citizen, I urge you to pay urgent attention. Cambodia is under attack — this is not a simple dispute, but a direct violation of our sovereignty and territorial integrity. Cambodia wants peace. We need the world to stand with Cambodia, speak out against aggression, and protect peace and justice. Please help raise global awareness and stop this act of war.

  10. There is no reason for Cambodian to invade. Cambodia does not want and is careless about obtaining Thai's land or property. Is it wrong for them to stand up to the Thai bullies at the border to defend their country? Thailand is finding opportunities to claim Cambodian's property and land that they wanted for many years. Thailand refused to listen to the border confirmed by the French and refused to accept the border confirmed by ICF in 1962. They disrespected the borderline. Now it's their chance to stretch their muscle to claim what they want. What a BULLY.

  11. Who start first that’s disputing blamed each other.Every country has Intelligence unit and
they know well who was first start.Canbodia use old way war such raid and blame don’t Hunsen realise that we live in new world a lot of mean like media and any other that enable to reveal who right or wrong. As know Hunsen has been Cambodia PM for more than 30 years. There are 98 MP belong to khmer regime only 2 MP are opposite side no matter consider about smaller country but
Hunsen and his son thirsty in power and benefit.Let see the true.

  12. France Indochina colony took Thai territories by gunboats and give it to Cambodia

Thailand still have no agreement with Cambodia since Franco-Siam treaty 1907

  13. Cambodia did not start this war — we are defending ourselves. Siam forces crossed into our land, rejected peace talks, and responded with heavy artillery, including cluster munitions banned by global norms. The battlefield is in Cambodian territory, and yet Siam frames us as the aggressor.

We mourn the soldiers they killed. We opened diplomatic channels — they shut them. We requested international mediation — they refused and even announced martial law. Is this what the self-proclaimed peace seeking country does?

Siam didn’t just provoke a border clash; they threatened multiple provinces and targeted our infrastructure. Even Cambodian laborers working in Thailand were assaulted and humiliated by local boxers and gangsters.

The world deserves to know the truth behind this conflict — not the script written by the louder voice.

  14. Thailand spat on international law only when it suited them. All of this is happen when the second army commander close the temple deny Cambodia entry to the disputed temple. Cambodia always adhere to international law. We want to sovle the dispute peacefully. This is why we want to bring this case to the ICJ. Instead Thailand forcefully take control of the temple. We have no choice but to protect our soverignty.

If Thailand is not a theif. Don't be afraid go to the ICJ. Don't spat on International law only when it suited you.

  15. Please come and see, come help Cambodia too. We are only defending ourselves, not looking for trouble. We are victims😭😭😭😭😭 please help stop the war. I am running from home😢.

  16. Thailand’s invasion forced more than 130,000 civilians including pregnant women, the elderly, people with disabilities, and children to flee their homes. On top of that, Thailand expelled approximately 530,000 Cambodian workers, who were forced to return to Cambodia.

  17. Ministry of Defense Spokesperson: As of 11 a.m. on July 28, the Thai invasion army continued to fire on Cambodia, causing widespread fires.

  18. Despite the intervention of President Donald Trump and the agreement of all parties to participate in Malaysia-led mediation between the United States and China, scheduled for 3:00 PM today, 28 July 2025, Thai military forces launched an aggressive bombing campaign on Cambodian territory earlier this morning. While they speak of “dialogue,” their actions clearly signal “escalation.” Reports indicate that Thailand has used chemical weapons against Cambodia. My country 🇰🇭, and our sacred heritage — especially the Preah Vihear Temple — are now victims of Thailand’s internal turmoil spilling across our borders.

  19. The clash point is at Prasat Ta Muen Thom, historically, Prasat Ta Muen Thom is Khmer in origin — and Thailand did not even exist when it was constructed.

Luckily, Cambodia has great leader who loves peace as other leaders in Asian community, especially as the president of united states Donald J Trump. Thank you very much the president Donald J Trump for initiating peace talks between Cambodia and Thailand.
    “Don’t Thai to me.”
Meaning: don’t act like the victim when you’re really the aggressor!

If Thailand REALLY wants peace, go to ICJ.

  20. I saw news from Cambodia saying that Thailand used chemical attack, but that was a firefighting plane and it was a fire extinguishing agent. They probably think that people all over the world are stupid. It is worthy of being a country with the number one cybercrime rate in the world. They like to lie to the world.

  21. Thai owner…Thai first found…France is thief..Cambodia receiving stolen property and want it more…Thai fight back for right
