More than 140,000 flee as Thai, Cambodian border clashes escalate • FRANCE 24 English

The terrifying sounds of war. For a second day, civilians along the border flee with whatever they can carry. Tidarat made it to a shelter, but still worries about her animals and crops at home. But being here does feel safer since we’re far from the danger zone now. At least we’re safe. My whole family made it out together, so that eases the anxiety. The staff have been coordinating well and helping everyone. We’ve all received good support. And though separated by armies and a border, on the Cambodian side, the concerns are similar. Yes, I was worried when the fighting broke out. First about my livelihood and second about my children’s education. They couldn’t go to their school. So, I faced a lot of difficulties. Even looking after the cattle was difficult because all my children had fled. Both sides continue to blame the other for the latest round of fighting. The UN Security Council is set to discuss the conflict, but there are signs that attempts to end the fighting might fall on deaf ears. The former Thai prime minister, who was a close ally and friend of Hunen, the longtime ruler of Cambodia and still an influential figure in Thai politics, posted, “Many countries are concerned about the conflict between Thailand and Cambodia and have offered to mediate. I’ve thanked them all, but asked for a little bit more time because we really need to let the Thai military do its job and teach Hunen a lesson about his cunning.” So for the moment, civilians are left to shelter in limbo as they wait for leaders to bring an end to the fighting.

Recent clashes between Thailand and Cambodia have led to the displacement of over 100,000 civilians as both countries evacuate residents near the border. The fighting, which escalated on Thursday with the use of jets, artillery, and tanks, has resulted in numerous casualties and prompted international calls for a ceasefire.   2. Thailand is no longer the Thailand that even the II World War skipped, it has lost its charm. And no sane people wants to see another 'Killing Fields' in Cambodia.
