On the 80th anniversary of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki – and as renewed nuclear threats emerge in current conflicts – several U.S. Catholic bishops will travel to Japan on a “Pilgrimage of Peace.” Cardinals Blase J. Cupich of Chicago and Robert W. McElroy of Washington are joined by Archbishops Paul D. Etienne of Seattle and John C. Wester of Santa Fe will visit the two Japanese cities Aug. 5-10, celebrating Masses for the victims of the 1945 attacks, engaging in dialogue and interfaith prayer, and participating in commemoration services and processions. The delegation will include faculty, staff, and students from several U.S. Catholic universities.
