The more than two-kilometre-long landscaped stretch along the Mūkusalas Street river bank from the AB dam to the Mūkusalas roundabout, is planned to be completed within the deadline – by November. However, the €20 million project will not include the originally planned 2.5 metre wide pedestrian and cycle bridge under the Akmens Bridge, Latvian Radio reports on 1 August.

“Having considered all the technical things, the technical condition of the Akmens Bridge and other aspects, [part of the project] has been ruled out for now, but in order to make this connection more convenient, the connection solutions on the existing road are being improved,” explained Mārtiņš Slimbahs, head of the municipality’s Public Infrastructure Development Authority.

“At the moment, there are two tunnels. One is a road tunnel, the other is a pedestrian tunnel. Let’s make it so that they are landscaped, new lighting is put in, environmental accessibility requirements. In the tunnel that is under the Akmens Bridge – the carriageway of Mūkusalas Street – the pavement is being widened, new lighting is being put in, including a new carriageway surface and improved storm water drainage solutions so as to make this place more convenient and safer for connectivity,” Slimbahs continued.

The pedestrian pavement and greenery are currently being constructed. More attention is being paid to the construction of pontoons on the Daugava River.

The reconstruction of the Mūkusala waterfront started in December 2023 and is scheduled to be completed at the end of 2025.

Despite being right on the main pedestrian bridge over the River Daugava and in close proximity to the Latvian National Library and a large hotel, the tunnel and pathway arrangement have been both confusing and uninviting for years, particularly for tourists encountering them for the first time.

The project is being implemented by the Public Infrastructure Development Board of the Riga City Council Central Administration. The construction works are being carried out by SIA “Tilts”. The total planned funding for the strengthening of the Mūkusalas Street embankment and the construction of related infrastructure is approximately EUR 20 million excluding VAT. 85% of the costs will be financed by a loan from the State Treasury, while 15% will be financed by the Riga Municipality.
