CALERA, Ala. (WBRC) – Investigators with Calera Police Department executed a search warrant at a home on Village Lane on Thursday night, July 31.
Police say as a result of the operation, Roger Delacruz Perez was taken into custody on the charge of first-degree rape. During the search, Perez—who is illegally in our country―was found to be in possession of a handgun. Undocumented immigrants are prohibited from possessing firearms under federal law.
Due to the nature of the offenses and Perez’s immigration status, the Calera Police Department says they will be seeking federal prosecution in addition to the state first-degree rape charge.
“I want to thank our detectives and crime scene investigators who upon learning of this violent crime, worked tirelessly. They identified, located and had this suspect in custody less than 48 hours after the crime was reported. Our tactical team executed the entry and arrest quickly and with great regard for the safety of the neighbors nearby. I know that many of you have varying opinions on law enforcement, immigration and politics, but this case is a prime example that demonstrates the need for well trained, adequately staffed and equipped, proactive law enforcement. This victim and all victims deserve our best,” said Calera Police Chief David Hyche.
