Rising numbers of well-off pupils do ‘grinds’ to boost Leaving Cert grades

  1. That’s hardly a revelation or newsworthy. Whoever wrote this must think they’re an investigative journalist.

  2. Is this news?
Everyone knows priviliged kids get better guidance, access to grinds, better notes for exams.
Our english teacher covered every single poem and made us all write essays, providing generic feedback while posh schools had half the syllabus narrowed down off the bat and were given sample essays.

  3. Pupils are wealthy these days? Doing grinds on the side in Lesson Street …… not to mention paying for accommodation!!!

  4. This happens in literally every country around the world, every year, and it’s been like that for years. This is hardly news!

  5. Did every commenter miss the first word of the headline? Yes, obviously everyone knows people get grinds, but apparently it’s becoming more and more common. That is news. I’m quite surprised that 60% of LC students get them.

  6. Eh, this is definitely not a new thing. I’m 38 and did my leaving cert 20 years ago and got grinds. I didn’t grow up well off either!

  7. I went to a not well-off rural school. I was the only person in my maths class not doing grinds. Most people were doing grinds in at least 2 subjects.

It’s not just well-off pupils. Yeah, some parents can’t afford any grinds, but it’s hardly some elite minority doing them.

  8. Listen, money had little to no bearing on what universities you can get into, that’s the best we can hope for. What are they going to do, ban students paying for grinds?
