Thailand and Cambodia agree truce after five days of fighting • FRANCE 24 English

Now leaders from Thailand and Cambodia have expressed their willingness for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire following talks in Malaysia. After 5 days of crossber clashes, a truce is set to go into effect at midnight local time. Malaysia’s prime minister who hosted the talk said sides have agreed to resume direct negotiations. Take a listen. Both Cambodia and Thailand reached a common understanding as follows. One, an immediate and unconditional ceasefire with effect from 24 hours local time midnight on 28th July 2025. Tonight, this is a vital first step towards deescalation and the restoration of peace and security. We can now go across to correspondent Tommy Walker standing by in Bangkok for us. Uh Tommy, what more details do we have uh on this ceasefire agreement and steps uh down in the future to to improve prove peace? Yes, as the clip just showed there, this ceasefire has been thrashed out, it seems, and it comes is supposed to come into force in about just less than 5 hours, midnight tonight. Um um so yeah the the the Thailand and Cambodia finally came to the table. I think this is what was needed. Thailand was saying to Cambodia they needed sincere intention for them to have a ceasefire. Um it it felt that none of the neither of them wanted to back down. We’ve seen Malaysia and the United States come in immediate this and then it’s turned into a ceasefire quite quick quicker than what people thought. That’s because conflict has been ongoing for 5 days. Even today the Royal Thai military came out and said that there was five uh clashes at border points. I’m in Uban Rajentani right now and we were speaking to villagers. One villager whose house had been hit last week and um actually killed one person. Uh that village had been largely evacuated and there was only a few villagers left but we could still hear could still hear the distant sound of artillery and shelling in the background quite regular as well. and that came around about the time that this statement of a ceasefire was released. So, there’s a small window now until midnight. We’re just going to have to see whether the Thailand or Cambodia um actually starts the ceasefire unofficially now or do they continue to fight a little before before this um ceasefire comes into place.   15. Inconsistency. ASEAN Chairman and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar said that the ceasefire between Thailand and Cambodia was effective at 7 am on July 29. Therefore, Thailand will continue to fire at Cambodia until 7 am on July 29, 2025.

  22. Thailand also wants peace. We have always stood firmly against war and have no intention whatsoever of harming Cambodian civilians. The conflict was entirely caused by Hun Sen. He even spread fake news to mislead the public and used civilians as human shields. On top of that, he attacked Thai villagers, Thai gas stations, and Thai hospitals.

Thailand has violated the ceasefire agreement by arresting 20 Cambodian soldiers (and shooting two others whose conditions remain unknown—whether dead or alive) under the pretense of inviting them to shake hands and take group photos. Thailand’s actions constitute a breach of the Kuala Lumpur ceasefire agreement and are in violation of international law, specifically the 1949 Geneva Conventions concerning the treatment of prisoners of war (POWs). Cambodia must gather evidence in order to condemn Thailand for committing war crimes
