Meghan Markle thought the size of Nottingham Cottage, the home given to her and Prince Harry before their wedding was an indirect snub from the royal family, an insider has claimed.

Royal expert Tom Quinn suggested that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s rift with the monarchy was linked to Meghan’s unhappiness with the modest size of the cottage where they lived for two years before tying the knot.

Harry moved into the house, which sits in the grounds of Kensington Palace, in 2013 – but his fiancee reportedly thought he should have been given a home matching the scale of Prince William and Kate’s lavish £635m apartment inside the palace, which they moved out of in 2022.

“Starting life as a member of the royal family in Nottingham Cottage was the beginning of all Meghan’s troubles,” Mr Quinn wrote. “She felt it was so small that it must be a reflection on how the royal family were belittling her husband.

“She just didn’t understand that real royals don’t care much about houses and material possessions because, having always had them, they take them for granted.”
