If you’re a certain flavor of millennial, your intro to Zac Efron was most likely through the High School Musical film series as Troy Bolton.

As you also know, High School Musical involved a fair amount of singing from its actors — and there’s apparently been some hubbub over the years that Zac didn’t sing in the film at all.

In a new interview with Entertainment Tonight, High School Musical director Kenny Ortega set the record straight and confirmed that, yes, Zac’s singing voice is present in the film.

As Kenny explained, Zac’s vocals in the films were mixed with actor Drew Seeley’s, who previously recorded the songs before Zac had signed on for the role of Troy.

“The songs were written before Zac got the role,” Kenny explained. “So, although he could sing, and he had a lovely voice, it wasn’t the voice that the songs were written for.”

“So he sang everything and we dubbed parts of it, so that it had greater vocal strength.”
