Inflation at 8.5% and a 1% pay increase means a significant pay cut in real terms.
I don’t blame them.
They’re treated horrifically, especially the young teachers. Spend a day in their shoes and you’d realise why they have to strike so much.
Join a union lads
I mean they want to wreck the Leaving Cert. So yes. There’s definitely a way to keep a terminal exam in 5th if that’s what they want but the content of the papers in English and Irish need to be swapped around. Also in Ireland, a small everyone knows everyone country, we should NOT be assessing our own Leaving Certs.
Terrible take. Teacher Unions advocating for their members to prevent an effective wage cut is the way it should be for every Industry.
**This sub:** Workers need to use their collective power to get better working conditions
**Also this sub:** How dare teachers use their collective power to get better working conditions!

Absolutely wild to see the hatred teachers get here. Some people have serious issues. Probably still angry about whatever shit teachers they have 30/40 years ago.
Maybe other sectors should unionize themselves? Teachers annoy me as much as anyone but they get good conditions because they have decent union advocating for them. Same for nurses, who are relatively well paid due to collective bargaining. (I know work conditions for nurses are shocking)
I expect all unions to strike or propose industrial action for higher wages over the next couple of years.
I’m not arguing one way or the other, but just for some context,
Teachers in Ireland are already some of the best paid in the EU.
And not by a couple of percent or the standard “differences in cost of living” that we see between countries.
Starting salary – 7th highest in EU
Average gross salary for secondary – 5th highest in EU.
Teachers in Ireland are just paid way more than the vast majority of teachers anywhere else in the EU. That also doesn’t include any extra allowances (teaching in Irish, etc) or additional overtime or grading pay for exams.
Again, not on either side but because it’s the midterms, there are way more teachers here so this neutral position, factual post will most likely get downvoted to hell.
The best teachers should be paid like RTE staff. RTE staff should be made teach the worst behaving classrooms. I’ll now turn my hand to solving world poverty…
