The Chesapeake Youth Symphony Orchestra (CYSO), based in Annapolis, recently wrapped up an international summer tour through Finland, Sweden, and Estonia, offering young musicians the opportunity to perform abroad and immerse themselves in Northern European music and culture.

Musical Highlights Across Borders

The tour began in Finland with a visit to Ainola, the former home of famed Finnish composer Jean Sibelius. Students explored his legacy and gained insight into his impact on orchestral music. CYSO also had the rare opportunity to perform for acclaimed Finnish conductor Jorma Panula, a mentor to many of the world’s top conductors.

In Sweden, the orchestra played in Pohjanranta and participated in a church service at Haparanda Church, showcasing their talents in both concert and sacred settings. The tour also included a featured performance at the Kaustinen Folk Music Festival, the largest folk music celebration in the Nordic countries, where the students both performed and attended a variety of musical events.

Immersive Cultural Experiences

Beyond music, the tour offered students memorable cultural experiences. The group visited Santa Claus Village in Lapland, where they crossed the Arctic Circle, and spent time at a wildlife park observing polar bears, brown bears, moose, and other native species. Students also explored the shores of Kalajoki Beach, enjoyed local water parks and adventure centers, and experienced a traditional Finnish sauna.

Their time in Helsinki included stops at the iconic Rock Church, the Fazer chocolate factory, and a ferry trip to Suomenlinna, a historic sea fortress and UNESCO World Heritage Site. The final leg of the journey took them to Tallinn, Estonia, where students toured the city’s medieval old town and absorbed the region’s rich history and architecture.

A Lasting Impact on Young Musicians

“This tour provided our students with valuable performance opportunities and a chance to connect with music and culture beyond their own community,” said Dane Krich, Executive Director of CYSO. “It was a meaningful experience that they will carry forward into their music education.”

CYSO extended thanks to the families, supporters, and community partners who made the tour possible. The organization continues its mission of nurturing the next generation of musicians through high-quality ensemble training and educational opportunities.
