A representative from North Korea has taken to the podium at the United Nations for a conference in Geneva, and accused the US and South Korea of preparing for nuclear war behind the scenes.
The representative also used that accusation as a justification of North Korea’s nuclear armament as necessary for so-called self-defence. During a speech at the Sixth World Conference of Speakers of Parliament on Wednesday (July 30), the chairman of the Supreme People’s Assembly (SPA) Pak In Chol claimed that: “preparations of the United States and the ROK to actualize the nuclear war have entered the grave stage”.
He continued to argue that the DPRK needs “a peaceful and stable environment” to achieve economic prosperity for the “happiness of the people”.
Chol continued: “Possessing capabilities to cope proactively with various security threats of the present and the future posed by the United States is an issue of vital importance to our state for defending its sovereignty, security threats and territorial integrity”.
In true North Korean fashion, the representative sent a direct insult to the US. They accused the nation of trying to establish a “hegemonic” world order.
He swiped: “the DPRK will never tolerate the high handedness and arbitrariness of the United States and its following forces”.
But this is nothing new, as Pyongyang has long accused the U.S. and South Korea of preparing for a “nuclear war” against it, even as it has developed its own new weapons of mass destruction and deployed tactical-nuclear weapons aimed at the South.
Last July, a spokesperson for the country’s defence ministry claimed that the US and North Korea were “stepping up their preparations for a nuclear war against the DPRK” after signing nuclear guidelines on deterring North Korean threats.
Pyongyang also argued in May that U.S.-ROK joint exercises were an attempt to make “nuclear war a fait accompli” and required the North to “prepare for a rapid reaction capability and a thoroughgoing war posture”.
This was only the second time North Korea has ever participated in the World Conference of Speakers of Parliament since they joined in 2010.
Not wasting any time, Pak reportedly left for Geneva last Saturday and met Russian Federation Council Speaker Valentina Matvienko on Tuesday.
According to the Russian Mission in Geneva, Matvienko told Pak that several regions in Russia are now in partnerships with the DPRK.
Noting their positive partnership, Pak noted that North Korea “will help the people of Russia support the struggle for their sovereignty and territorial integrity”.
