Taiwanese voters reject attempt to recall China-friendly lawmakers • FRANCE 24 English

Residents of Taipei watched with baited breath as preliminary results of the recall vote rolled in. They showed that Taiwanese voters had rejected an attempt to oust 24 members of the opposition Kuomo Tong or KMT party who faced criticism for what many see as a soft stance on China. It was a devastating blow for the Democratic Progressive Party or the DPP who had hoped to regain control of the parliament. All the Taiwanese people will bear the consequences of the results. Democracy and freedom are so precious. Their values are so precious. Freedom, human rights, and rule of law. But if Chinese communist arrive here, we will lose all of this. The KMT party celebrated their victory and criticized President Lingu for supporting the measure. He should deeply reflect and review how Taiwan should respond and what actions it should take in the face of global economic competition and a tariff trade war. So we can collectively overcome this greatest challenge without the mindset of political infighting. Political gridlock has gripped the Taiwanese parliament since the 2024 elections. Though lie, who is pro-independence and at odds with China, won the presidency, his party, the DPP, lost its legislative majority. Opposition parties have since joined forces to block the president’s agenda, including for a higher defense budget for the island. Tensions have soared in the legislative body, prompting brawls in parliament and large-scale street protests. Another recall vote is set for August 23rd, targeting another seven opposition lawmakers. Okay.

  1. Thumbs down on results not the video or channel. Chicoms are relentless in their chicanery and aggression. The KMT have always been corrupt and are a viper in the nest of Taiwanese democracy.

  2. Taiwan is an inseparable part of China. Anyone thinking that he can separate Taiwan from China is day dreaming.

  3. It's funny people who claim they're protectors of democracy and freedom are always the ones doing the exact opposite.

  4. The lawmakers won free and fair elections, DPP organized a recall to try and get legislature majority. Western media, nothing about Ke being a political prisoner under Lai.

  5. There is a lot of communist bots here who are defaming the Republic of China here. Don’t be confused, just because people in Taiwan are voting for the very same party the CCP tried to wipe off of the planet, doesn’t mean that they want their 114 year old country and freedom to be lost.

  6. I really suggest changing "China-friendly" to something like "non-China provoking". The former just paints an unfair bullseye on their backs.

  7. Such a waste of political capital for Dr Lai. He tried to get a recall without knowing for sure that it would succeed. His predecessor would never have been so rash.

  8. Better to be China friendly than to be Uncle Sam’s disposable cudgel against China.

The question they should ask themselves, who will suffer and who stands to gain?

  9. This is not about pro Beijing or pro Washington, this is about a ruling party tried to make a political move for more power and it failed spectacularly

  10. Many voters who do not support the DPP’s recall action are also China-UNFRIENDLY. The DPP, on the contrary, is more China-friendly. Such a title is really unprofessional and unfair reporting. 👎👎👎

  11. Unfortunately, Taiwan may find itself needing to rely on China, as the United States has not proven to be a consistently reliable ally. While China presents its own challenges, it is a familiar counterpart—one with deep historical and cultural ties.

  12. Democracy in Taiwan is a joke. Under the DPP regime, opposing voices in the media were banned. History textbooks have been rewritten. The voter's choices not respected. Taiwan is Uncle Sam's pawn in the China-US competition. DPP is the lapdog barking up at the Taiwan strait. The US regime already retracted much of its military forces out of the first and even second island chains. USS aircraft carriers no long dare go near the Taiwan strait. They will be sitting ducks facing China's DF- missiles if they ever participate in a Taiwan strait conflict. Rounds of Pentagon war-games ended in the same result: calamitous defeat of the US military near China's shores. The Pentagon knows the score.

  13. DPP lost. Never abuse your rights! You do not initiate a large scale recall just because you lost the parliament election and want to annihilate the result. That’s unjust!

  14. What kind of “Democratic” Party would so ruthlessly attempt to eliminate the entire opposition party and choose to ignore the the black swans and grey rhinos facing Taiwan – Totally dysfunctional and incompetent!
