> Roshchyna, 27, disappeared in August 2023 while reporting from Ukraine’s Russian-occupied territories. Moscow admitted in 2024 that she was in Russian detention.

> Her body was returned to Ukraine in late February and falsely labeled as that of an “unidentified man.” A forensic examination was later able to identify the body as Roshchyna’s through DNA testing.
Roshchyna’s body was so badly mutilated in Russian detention, they could only identify her through DNA testing.
She lived and died a hero who stood against evil. And she won’t be forgotten. Peace to her and her family.
Slava Ukraini, heroyam slava.

What we know of what she endured is discussed in the articles [here](https://www.theguardian.com/world/series/the-viktoriia-project).
She was absolutely a hero, like many many other Ukrainians, and it’s awful that she had to pay for that in a country that did not share her same moral values.
There is only so much amount of evil and pain that the human race can withstand before accepting to do what is right, whatever the cost. Not just because it’s evil, but because it is incompatible with our future.
Kind of ironic when we live in a time where journalists are being censored more and more
Truly heroic. Grateful Ukraine could see through the Russian brutality and cover up to properly celebrate Viktoria Roshchyna and her contributions to Ukraine and its brave soldiers and citizens.
Her body had missing organs, broken bones and electrical burns. This is how Russia treats captives: it tortures them to death.
