  1. I mean, joining is a big thing and seems off. So why don’t we just try to have special treaty between Canada and the EU to work closer together? Like way closer than ever before?

  2. Losing UK and getting Canada instead would certainly be an upgrade. UK is resource poor, Canada is immense in terms of natural resources. I hope they join, it would be awesome.

  3. Just incorporate it into France and call it outermost regions.

  4. I don’t think this makes sense for the EU or for Canada long term.

  5. As much as I would like it, I just don’t think it’s feasible as although we are very similar, we also have quite a few differences. But, I would like to see my country (Canada) develop closer ties with Europe.

  6. Canada joining the EU doesn’t really make practical sense. The EU is a regional union with its own geographic and economic challenges. Canada is literally on another continent.Plus, adapting to EU rules might mess with stuff they’ve already built

  7. Sorry canada, as a European i dont want to have a Schengen land border with the US. The potential of gun smuggling into the Union is to great of a risk

  8. Not even 50% of the people want it, so why posting it here?

  9. I don’t want to join, but as close of relations as possible outside of that. I suspect many of the people responding to these polls only understand 1 percent of the implications a decision like that means and I think there would be a lot less yes answers of they had the full story.

This is more of an emotional response than a thought out one I’m my opinion. No offense meant friends. I just think that while Canadians would rather have European food standards and consumer protections, the losing autonomy would be a big issue with a fair amount of people here.

Like I said though, I’d love to continue to more deeply develope trade and movement of skilled labour as well as hopefully picking up a thing or two from Europe with food and other standards.

  10. A silly question. Canada needs a relationship like Norway or Switzerland. Actual membership does not provide any plausible benefits for EU or Canada.

  11. Canada can be a close partner to EU without necessarily being in the EU.

  12. No, It shouldn’t because Canada isn’t in Europe. Easy.

  13. I want 6 weeks vacation and European labour standard. Not to mention food safety and regulations

  14. Canadian here that lives between Canada and Europe and while I love the idea of Canada being in the EU, I think we just need to build strong trade and movement relationships.

I’m not sure anyone wants or needs freedom of labour movement but we could enhance tourism between the EU and Canada as all of us are looking to visit anywhere but the US. Yes I know many European cities are overwhelmed with tourism but we can deal with that through incentives to visit EU locations needing more tourism revenue.

The bottom line is that the US is going to dominated by these extremists for probably a long time to come and the world needs to just start working around them.

  15. Yes! And Australia too. Maybe also Japan and South Korea.

    Free trade among democracies!

  16. The title is a bit misleading. The question was “should the Canadian government look into joining EU” not if Canada should join EU.

  17. We have israel and Australia in ESC who even cares at this point let them in.

If they follow the rules, the more the merrier and Canada at least in theory, shares the same values

  18. I understand people saying Canada is not in Europe and stuff, but why does that technicality have such a normative value?
