Austrian authorities have dismantled a criminal network behind a string of violent ATM robberies across the country, detaining 14 suspects since the beginning of the year. The majority of those arrested are Dutch nationals of Moroccan origin.

The group is accused of blowing up at least 26 ATMs since January 2025, using stolen or fake-plated vehicles to approach machines late at night, detonate them with explosives, and steal the cash inside. The attacks occurred in low-traffic areas to avoid detection, media outlet “Zamin” reported.

Joint raids conducted by Austrian and Dutch police targeted 12 locations across both countries, seizing 16 scooters, over 50 mobile phones, nearly half a kilogram of explosives, various drugs, and EUR 39,000 in cash.

While the group operated in Austria, similar attacks have been recorded in neighboring Germany, which reported over 800 ATM bombings across 2022 and 2023. German authorities are now pushing for tougher penalties for the use of explosives in such crimes.

Austria’s investigation is ongoing, with 33 suspects currently under scrutiny.
