It’s obvious, surely: most native English-speakers have never studied German and don’t know how the word is pronounced.

I can’t help it. I _know_ it’s pronounced “boat”. If I see it in a sentence, I think “boat”. If I need to talk to someone about seafaring, I pronounce it “boat”.
But the tv series/film? I think Das Boot. Every time.
