No limit on Ukrainian refugees entering State, says Taoiseach

  1. The infrastructure just isn’t here to support this. The sensible thing would be to donate money to those country’s that are better able to accommodate them.

  2. As expected. There’s absolutely no reason why Ireland should have some sort of exemption when poorer countries are on the frontlines.

  3. Your outrage shouldn’t be “why are we doing XYZ to help the Ukrainians”. In any situation we should be giving it our all to help them. The question should be “why didnt you do XYZ the last 5+ years to help Irish people”.

Its apparent the government could have been doing a lot more the last few years and… just wasnt.

  4. So what do we think is behind the unreasonable approach the government are taking to this? No limit to the numbers, seemingly looking to get every family who comes into a house.

Are they all angling for some gravy train jobs in Brussels?

  5. Great, so I am guessing the government will announce an emergency package to double the rate of new builds soon. Right?

I am absolutely all for taking in as many Ukrainians as we can, so let’s do two birds with one stone. Surely they understand the physical limits of our housing capacity. Right?

  6. Rash look at me pretence. They really haven’t thought it through. Watch now how they’ll rush to cover their arses now once the realisation kicks in. What a pity we couldn’t have reacted so fast to deal with our housing crisis (of course they didn’t want to do anything that would impact on the market and their cronies).

  7. There’s no limit because it’s not their choice, the EU invoked an emergency directive that suspends the normal asylum process for displaced Ukrainians and now we’re being allocated a percentage of the total based on our population and GDP. The government can’t put a cap on it because we’re obligated to accept X% of them no matter how many that ends up being.

Ireland’s not the only country that’s struggling with the influx either, there was a story out of Germany recently where they were booting refugees from other countries out of their accommodation in an attempt to shuffle things around to make room for all the Ukrainians.

  8. Lol. Virtue signalling at its peak.

Went to a viewing today, it was like the security queue at the airport. People clamouring for a chance to buy a home for themselves.

This move would’ve been nice if only there were enough homes to accommodate people fleeing the war zone.

  9. Pathetic that I see people disagreeing with this shit, same when it was the same for Afghan refugees. Scum, move to America with that ‘anti refugee’ attitude.

  10. Can we complain to the EU that our Government is not doing enough to support the housing needs for Families in ireland?

  11. Meanwhile there was already rising homelessness, absolutely daft shit this is, what a fucking joke our government is, thousands homeless in their own back yard and they do fuck all, then when there’s thousands homeless abroad they bend over backwards. It’s like a reverse discrimination where they go too far in bending backwards for others while fucking over the people they’re responsible for. I’m all for aid packages, financial help, arms, food and medical supplies but fuck me our housing is the one thing we need and don’t have we can’t be giving it away.

  12. I’m honestly quite disappointed with most of the comments here. We can help these people and we should. Most of them want to go home ASAP. I agree it would be fantastic if this political will was evident during peacetime but please let’s help these people!

  13. Government needs to have the support network to take care of these woman and children, trafficking is a real concern, this feels like an empty gesture for the press, I highly doubt we can even support 200,000 we’re expected to take in, let alone even half.

Infrastructure, housing, school and healthcare can barely manage the current numbers of people.

  14. I’m a bit drunk but am I wrong in concluding that they’re creating a bit of a shitstorm for Sinn Fein to deal with because they know they’re going to be in charge next?

  15. It shows just how easy it is for them to fix housing. FF/FG don’t care about the Irish worker who breaks his back for 10 months just to pay the rent to a double-chinned FG voter. They can help us, but they won’t – unless they’re Ukrainian

  16. Good, get rid of this far right crap (putting limits on immigration and scare mongers) that has been touted in the last couple of days. Ireland is not and I hope not, a racist state. We will do our fair share and do it with the resources we have. We as a people are beneficiaries of generosity worldwide and another time for us to shine comes again.

  17. Watch him watch on in amazement when Mr Albert Hiltener is voted in next time round. ‘How the hell did that happen?’ He’ll say.

  18. We really really don’t have the current infrastructure to deal with what we already have I am 100% on board with taken on Refugees, but I feel this is turning into a pissing competition with the UK.

I was hesitant with 200k but was ok with it after a while, if we have more than that I am going to predict this is going to cause unnecessary animosity to these people from Irish people who where already pissed off with the current state of Affairs.

Also this may mean we will have to limit migration from other countries to off balance this situation.

  19. I think we should take them, we are in a privileged position and many other countries have taken Irish immigrants in historically.

It is and will further highlight failures of the state in regards to housing, transport, etc
It’s not the refugees fault that the state let a housing crisis develop to its current state and pushed us to be a car dependent society with poor public transportation.

Hopefully this will give the state the kick up the arse it needs, not only for the refugees fleeing a war in Europe, but also for our own citizens.

We live in a globally integrated world, especially connected to other European countries, so it’s inevitable that we’ll feel the pain of a war so close to home and we will have to make sacrifices and do our part which will be tiny compared to what Ukrainians have had to and continue to undergo.

  20. Made the horrible mistake of reading comments… Everyone is all for Ukraine until we take in people? Now suddenly everyone is an economist and is finding every excuse to wag their fingers at it.

Don’t get me wrong. I have plenty of fucking issues with this government.

But I’m not going to flip my lid over letting people come here to escape being fucking bombed. If it requires funds and lends I don’t care. I would prefer to be in a country that will take people in freely than be like the UK and try restrict as many as possible

  21. Ah sure just increase USC. That should do.

To hell with you Mehole and Lieo FFG. I’m going abroad. You can tax the immigrants to pay for this kip of a country.
